Shifting homes in Ambala
Ambala is two towns a few kilometres apart. Ambala Cantt grew around one of the oldest and largest cantonments in the country, and it still has regimental lines, officers' bungalows, the air force station and a railway junction that is the headquarters of a Northern Railway division. Ambala City is the older trading town, with its own bazaars, a well-known cloth market, a grain market and HUDA sectors built alongside.
Cantonment moves follow the forces' drill: a posting order, a date to vacate, a gate pass for the truck and a quarters inspection that has to be signed off. Bungalows in the older part of the Cantt are large, with high ceilings and deep verandas, and they hold a lot. In Ambala City the houses are closer together, some with shops below, while the sectors have plotted houses with a staircase and a roof. Few buildings in either half have a lift.
Outside the forces and the railway, Ambala makes scientific and laboratory instruments. Workshops around Sadar Bazar and the Science Market in the Cantt turn out glassware, microscopes and lab equipment that go to schools and colleges across India, and their owners and staff move like any business family, sometimes with stock and machines. Chandigarh is close enough for people to work there and live here, and the other way round.

The time goes elsewhere: the gate formalities in the Cantonment or the air force station, the long carry from the lanes behind the city's bazaars, and a bungalow's worth of furniture. Traffic on the GT Road and near the railway station slows a loaded truck at busy hours.

Society and building rules
Service quarters have the strictest routine. The unit or station issues the vehicle pass, the quarters are inspected against an inventory of fittings, and the keys go back only when the inspection is signed. Railway quarters are returned through the division's own process. Civilian homes are simpler, with only the landlord to square up over the last rent and the meter readings, and in the few apartment blocks a word with the secretary and a daytime slot for the lift.

Where the truck can stand
Inside the Cantonment the roads are wide and quiet, but the truck parks where the gate staff allow, which can be a walk from the door. The air force station is similar. Sadar Bazar and the lanes of Ambala City's old markets are too narrow and busy for a truck in the day, so a pickup carries goods to the nearest main road. The HUDA sectors and newer colonies take a full-size truck at the gate.

Traffic and timing
The GT Road through town, the approaches to the railway station and the markets are slowest at office hours and in the evening. Military occasions and VIP visits to the air force station can close Cantonment roads at short notice, so we keep a day in hand for posting moves. Diwali and the wedding season crowd Ambala City's cloth market. A weekday morning is the easiest start for a move in either half.

Weather and the months to plan around
Ambala sits near the foot of the Shivaliks and gets more rain than the plains to its south. July and August bring heavy spells, and in a bad year the Tangri and Ghaggar rivers flood low colonies in both halves of the town, so packing gets a plastic layer and we watch the forecast. May and June are hot, over 42°C. Winters are cold and foggy, and fog on NH 44 slows loads leaving at night. Plan for October, November or March if the posting allows.

My posting order has come. What do you need to get into Ambala Cantt or the air force station?
The names of the crew, the truck number and sometimes identity copies, sent early enough for the gate pass. Send us two dates: when the quarters must be empty, and when you are due at the new unit. We pack and load before the inspection, and the inventory and GST invoice are ready for the claim. Any car or bike is sent on a carrier.
Can you bring a household out of the lanes near Sadar Bazar?
Yes. Shoppers and handcarts take over the lanes by mid morning, so we start early, carry the big furniture out while the street is quiet, and a pickup shuttles to the truck on a wider road. At the survey we look at the stairs and the lane width, and the extra trips are included in the written quote.
Does the monsoon flooding in Ambala affect moving dates?
It can. After very heavy rain the Tangri and Ghaggar have flooded low parts of the town, and roads there have stayed flooded for more than a day. If your house is in one of those colonies, keep a spare day in July and August. Everything is packed with plastic under the wrap, and we check the route on the morning of the move.
Will Ambala to Chandigarh or Mohali be a one-day move?
Yes. Chandigarh is about 45 km away through Zirakpur, priced at our local rates. Heavy trucks are kept out of Chandigarh's sector roads through much of the day, so we choose the vehicle size or the arrival hour to suit. In a Mohali or Zirakpur tower, the society's lift slot sets the time.
