Shifting homes in Solan
Solan sits on the road from Kalka to Shimla, about halfway up, and it has spread well beyond its old centre. The old town climbs away from the Mall and the bazaar in steep lanes, while newer apartment blocks and houses line the bypass and run down the slopes towards Saproon and Chambaghat. Many buildings are cut into the hillside, with the road at the top floor and the flats below it, or the other way round.
The town is known for its mushrooms and tomatoes, and the Directorate of Mushroom Research has its campus at Chambaghat. The Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry at Nauni and Shoolini University bring students and faculty, and the Mohan Meakin brewery has worked here since the nineteenth century. Many residents work in the pharma units at Baddi and Parwanoo or in Shimla's offices, and the cantonments at Kasauli, Dagshai and Subathu are close by.
For a move, Solan sits between a hill town and a plains one. A full-size truck can use the highway and the bypass, so a long-distance load reaches the edge of town without a transfer. The last stretch is the real work: a lane too steep for a big vehicle, a block below the road with sixty steps, a flat with no lift. The survey looks at those and brings in a pickup or a smaller truck where the approach calls for one.

Most of Solan lies within 5 or 6 km of the Mall, from Chambaghat at the south end to the far side of the bypass, and Nauni is about 13 km out along the Rajgarh road. A flat or small house is done inside a day, and most of that day goes on the carry: stairs down a slope, a pickup ferrying from a lane the truck cannot use, and the queue at the town entry when traffic for Shimla builds up.

Chambaghat
The southern entry on the highway, with the mushroom research campus, houses and newer blocks. A truck reaches most buildings, and highway traffic sets the loading hour.
The Mall and the old bazaar
The old centre, with lanes too steep and narrow for a truck and shops open from morning. A pickup and a hand carry do the work.
Saproon
An older residential area with houses above and below narrow roads. A smaller vehicle gets near most homes, and some sit down a flight of steps.
The bypass and Shamti
Newer apartment blocks and houses along the bypass. Road access is good, but many blocks drop down the slope, so the carry goes downstairs.
Oachghat and Nauni

Society and building rules
Solan's apartment blocks are mostly small, run by the owners or a building committee, so the neighbours and the owner are the people to tell. Settle the rent, the water and electricity bills and the deposit before the day. University quarters at Nauni and staff housing in the cantonments have their own inspection and handover, and the loading date comes from it. Where the stair is shared, the crew needs it clear for a few hours.

Where the truck can stand
The highway and the bypass are wide enough for a full truck, and it can stop outside blocks built along them. Off those roads, Solan's lanes are steep and narrow, with tight bends, parked cars and no room to turn, so a pickup or a 14 ft truck is used. Many buildings stand below the road, entered at the top floor or down a flight of steps, and the crew carries from the roadside.

Traffic and timing
Everything bound for Shimla passes Solan on the highway, which slows at weekends, through the April to June tourist season and again at Christmas. The bazaar is busy from late morning. The Shoolini fair in June takes over the centre for three days, so a move near the Mall stays clear of it. On an ordinary weekday, a 7 am start is the smoothest way to load.

Weather and the months to plan around
Solan is milder than Shimla. Summer rarely goes above 30°C, and snow in town is light and rare. The monsoon is heavy, and from July to September slips on the four-lane near Parwanoo and on the link roads can hold a truck up for hours, so packing then uses polythene beneath the outer wrap. Winter nights are cold and damp. March to May and October to November are the gentlest months.

Our flat is below the road and entered from the top floor. How do you get furniture out?
The crew carries everything up the building's own stair to the road, in pieces where needed. Beds and wardrobes are unbolted inside the flat, a fridge is strapped and carried up upright, and a sofa that will not clear a landing is roped up outside where the slope allows. We count the floors below road level at the survey and size the crew to match.
Is Solan to Chandigarh or Mohali a one-day move?
Yes. Chandigarh is about 70 km down the four-lane, so a load that leaves Solan after breakfast is carried into the new home that afternoon. At the plains end, towers and sector houses have their own hours and rules, so send the new address early and the arrival is fitted to them.
Do you shift students leaving Nauni or Shoolini?
Yes. A hostel or rented room at Nauni, usually a bed, a table and a handful of cartons, takes an hour or so. A scooter leaving the state travels on a vehicle carrier. For a long move, space on a truck already heading your way is worth asking about, though it depends on the week and is never promised.
Will the monsoon hold up a move on the highway?
Sometimes. Slips on the four-lane and the link roads can close them for hours after a heavy night of rain. Between July and September we allow a wider delivery window, keep the loading to dry spells and seal each piece in polythene. Inside Solan itself a move is rarely held up by more than a few hours.
