Shifting homes in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad splits along the Sabarmati. East of the river is the older city: the walled city with its pols, where houses share walls and a gated lane, and around it Maninagar, Naroda, Nikol and Vastral, with apartment blocks and tenements, which is what Ahmedabad calls a small house in a row inside a society. West of the river are Navrangpura, Satellite and Vastrapur, and beyond them the towers of SG Highway, Science City Road, Bopal and Shela.
Each of these is its own kind of move. A pol house has a steep wooden staircase and doorways built for another century, so heavy pieces come apart upstairs and the crew carries them out along the lane. A tenement has no lift and a tight internal stair, though the truck can usually stand at the society gate. A tower on the west side is the easiest for carrying and the strictest on paperwork, with a booked service lift and a fixed slot.
People come to Ahmedabad for the pharma companies such as Zydus and Torrent, the car plants at Sanand, the estates at Naroda, Vatva and Odhav, and institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad, CEPT, NID and ISRO's Space Applications Centre. Packers and movers charges in Ahmedabad
A move across Ahmedabad often means crossing the river, and that is where the time goes. Naroda to Bopal is about 30 km and Maninagar to Satellite about 12, and in the evening a crossing on Nehru Bridge or Ellisbridge can take longer than the rest of the drive. A 2 BHK fits into a single day, packing to unpacking. A bungalow, or a large pol house full of wooden furniture, usually needs a packing day first.

Areas we cover in Ahmedabad
A landmark is often more use to us than an address, because it tells us the approach.
The walled city pols
Khadia, Raipur, Dariapur, Kalupur and Jamalpur. Lanes a handcart barely fits, so the truck is parked on a main road such as Relief Road and everything is carried out on foot.
Satellite, Vastrapur and Bodakdev
Apartment blocks and bungalow societies, many of them a few decades old and fitted with small lifts. The truck parks easily, but a fridge often has to take the stairs.
SG Highway, Bopal and Shela
High-rise towers with service lifts, where security takes down the truck's registration and every crew member's name before opening the gate.
Maninagar and Isanpur
Older, denser housing south of Kankaria with crowded market roads. A 14 ft truck fits most society gates, and loading goes faster before the shops open.
Naroda, Nikol and Vastral
The eastern side, near our office, with tenement societies and newer apartment blocks. Internal roads are narrow and cars park on both sides after dark.
Chandkheda, Motera and Gota
Northern suburbs towards Gandhinagar, mostly mid-rise and high-rise societies from the last fifteen years, where a full-size truck pulls in without trouble.

Society and building rules
Apartment schemes on the west side are run by a society office or the builder's maintenance team, and most want a written request, the truck number and a time. Many issue the move-out pass only after the maintenance account is settled, and some take a refundable deposit for the lift and lobby. Tenants are often asked for a letter from the owner. Tenement societies and pols are informal, and the secretary and the neighbours simply need to know the lane will be busy for a morning.

Where the truck can stand
West Ahmedabad suits a truck: broad roads, the service lanes along SG Highway, and gates with room to turn. The pols are the opposite. Their lanes take nothing bigger than a handcart or a small tempo, so the truck parks on whichever main road is closest and the carry can run past a hundred metres. Around Kalupur and the station the truck can stand only briefly, so we load in one quick session. BRTS corridors have their own lanes, and a truck cannot stop in them.

Traffic and timing
Police rules keep heavy goods vehicles off much of the city through the day, so a large truck is planned for the permitted hours and smaller vehicles do the daytime runs. The worst traffic sits at Iskcon, Shivranjani and Pakwan on the west side, at Naroda Patiya and Narol in the east, and on the river bridges from about 6 pm. On Rath Yatra day the old city closes to vehicles, and in Navratri the roads near the big garba grounds stay packed past midnight.

Weather and the months to plan around
Ahmedabad summers are fierce, and in May the afternoon can pass 45°C, so we pack in the morning and do not let electronics or polished wood sit in a parked truck through the midday heat. Rain arrives in late June and lasts into September. It is lighter than on the coast, but one downpour fills the underpasses and low roads for hours. November to February is dry and pleasant, the easiest time to move, though Uttarayan in mid-January puts the whole city on its terraces.

My family home is in a pol in Khadia. How will you get the furniture out?
Before quoting, we look over the house in person or by video and measure the stair and doorways. Beds, almirahs and the dining table come apart upstairs and are carried down the lane to a tempo or to the truck on the main road, which can be a long walk. Anything that will not fit the stair is discussed then, and the carry is written into the quote.
We are moving in January. Will Uttarayan get in the way?
Only on 14 and 15 January. The city is up on its terraces flying kites, shops shut, and kite string hangs across lanes and balconies, which makes carrying furniture down an open stair slow and risky. Pick a day either side and January is one of the best months to move in Ahmedabad: dry, cool and easy on the crew.
My employer is transferring me out of Ahmedabad. What documents will I get?
