The peths close to them, Mangalwar, Shukrawar and Shivaji Peth among them, are two and three storey houses and old wadas packed along narrow streets. Rajarampuri
Numbered residential lanes off a busy shopping road. The lanes are straight but lined with parked scooters and cars, so a 14 ft truck is the largest that turns in comfortably.

The bungalow colonies and the newer southern suburbs have room for a full-size truck. Rajarampuri's lanes and the streets behind Shahupuri take a 14 ft truck at most. In the peths around the temple, Gangavesh and Bindu Chowk, the lanes are too tight and too busy for anything but a tempo. Traffic and timing
The centre is slowest from late morning to evening around Dabholkar Corner, the Central Bus Stand, CPR Chowk and Mahadwar Road, so we like to start loading by 8 am. During Navratri the whole area around the Ambabai temple fills with devotees for ten days and traffic is diverted away from the temple roads, so a move in the peths is best done before or after it. Dasara and the Ganesh festival processions shut central streets on their evenings as well.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kolhapur has a real monsoon, heavier than the plains to the east, with steady rain from June to September and the worst of it in July and August. The Panchganga rises after heavy rain in the ghats, and in bad years it has flooded low parts of the city and crossed the highway near Shiroli, closing it for days. Summers are warm without being harsh, around 36°C in April. Moving is simplest between October and February, once the river has settled.

Can you move us out of a house in the peths near the Ambabai temple?
Yes. The lanes around Mahadwar Road and Gangavesh are too narrow for the truck, so it is parked where the road opens out and a tempo ferries the goods to it. Steep wooden stairs mean beds and almirahs are dismantled upstairs. Pick a date outside Navratri, when the temple crowds make the lanes impossible for any vehicle.
Is the Panchganga flood a risk if we move in August?
Inside most of the city, no, though low areas near the river can take water after days of heavy rain in the ghats. The bigger risk is the highway near Shiroli, which has gone under in the worst years. For a move out of Kolhapur in late July or August, we watch the river level and give a delivery window with a day of slack.
We have a bungalow with a lot of old wooden furniture. How do you handle it?
Carved beds, almirahs and dressing tables are taken apart where their joints allow, wrapped in bubble wrap and corrugated sheet, and stood upright in the truck. Pieces that do not come apart are measured against doors and stairs at the survey. A glass-fronted showcase or an antique piece can travel in a wooden crate, which is charged separately.

Yes. Belgaum is about 110 km down NH 48, so a house packed in the morning can be unloaded the same evening. Goa is about 220 km over the Amboli ghat or through Belgaum, and the truck usually arrives the next morning.
