Shifting homes in Shimla
Shimla is built along a ridge, and its houses step down both flanks of it. A building may open onto the road at its top floor, with the flats running four or five storeys down the slope, or stand far below the Cart Road at the foot of a long flight of steps. The older town still has British era cottages with timber floors and painted tin roofs, while Sanjauli, Lakkar Bazaar and New Shimla are crowded with concrete blocks, few of them with a lift.
That makes a Shimla move mostly a carrying job. Full-size trucks are impractical on the town's narrow roads, so a pickup or a light truck does the work inside the town, and a load bound for the plains is shifted to a bigger truck lower down the highway. From the roadside the crew carries everything, sometimes over a hundred steps, and a sofa or a double bed has to clear every turn of a narrow stair. The survey counts those steps and turns, and the crew is sized from them.
Government runs Shimla. The Secretariat at Chhota Shimla, the High Court, the office of the Accountant General and dozens of directorates bring officers and clerks on transfer, and the Army Training Command, Jutogh and Annadale bring army families. IGMC, Himachal Pradesh University at Summer Hill and the Indian Institute of Advanced Study add doctors, teachers and researchers. Distances in Shimla are small and slow. Sanjauli to Summer Hill is about 10 km along the Circular Road, and New Shimla to Chhota Shimla about 5 km, yet a 2 BHK often takes a full day because of the carry at both ends. A house far below the road may need a second morning. When the load is large, the pickup runs several trips, and the queues at Victory Tunnel, Tutikandi and Sanjauli chowk decide how quickly each one turns around.

Tall concrete blocks stacked on a steep slope, most without lifts. The pickup stops on the main road, and the carry up or down can run for hours.
Chhota Shimla and Kasumpti
Government colonies and quarters near the Secretariat, with better road access than most of the town but tight parking and fixed handover dates.
New Shimla and Panthaghati
Housing board sectors whose roads reach most blocks. The simplest part of Shimla for a vehicle, though the slope still means stairs.
Lakkar Bazaar and the Ridge
The old centre above the Cart Road, where the Mall and the Ridge are closed to vehicles. Everything moves on foot from the nearest permitted road.
Summer Hill and Boileauganj
The university and IIAS side, with narrow roads, old cottages and houses below the road. A small pickup and a long carry are usual.
Jutogh and Annadale
Army areas on the western spur and below the Ridge. Gate passes are needed, and the bends on the approach limit the length of the vehicle.

Society and building rules
Shimla has few housing societies in the city sense, but its buildings have their own habits. Neighbours in a block share one staircase, so agree the hours with them before the crew starts carrying. Owners expect the rent, the water charges and the electricity meter squared away before the keys change hands. Government and university quarters are returned through an estate office after inspection, and army houses at Jutogh and Annadale need gate passes for the crew and the vehicle.

Where the truck can stand
Most of central Shimla is off limits to a truck. The Mall and the Ridge are closed to vehicles, several roads around them are restricted and need a permit, and the Cart Road and Circular Road are narrow with little room to stop. A pickup or light truck works the town, pulling into a lay-by or a widening in the road, and the crew does the rest by hand. Traffic and timing
Tourists fill Shimla from April to June and again at Christmas and New Year, when the Circular Road, Victory Tunnel and the entries at Shoghi and Dhalli can stand still for an hour. Goods vehicles face timing limits on the town's roads, so the pickup runs early in the morning. Weekdays in March, October and November are the quietest. Carrying after dark on the slopes is avoided, because many of the paths are poorly lit.

Weather and the months to plan around
Snow is the big variable. From late December to February a fall can shut the roads beyond Dhalli and leave shaded bends in town icy for days, so a winter move is planned around the forecast. Between July and September the monsoon sets off slips and brings trees down across the roads, and every piece is packed with polythene under its cover. Summer is mild, rarely above 30°C. For a Shimla move, aim for March and April or for October and November.

Solan and Chandigarh are the short runs, Mandi and Dharamshala the usual postings inside the state, and Delhi takes many families once they settle down.

My flat is 120 steps below the Cart Road. Can you still move it?
Yes. At the survey the steps are counted and the turns measured, and the crew is sized to carry in relays. Beds, wardrobes and tables are opened up inside the flat, and anything that will not clear a turn is roped along the slope where that is safe. A move like this runs longer, and the written quote shows the carry as its own item.
Can we move in January, when it snows?
Often, yes, with a flexible date. After a fresh fall the roads out of town stay shut until they are cleared, and icy stretches make a loaded pickup unsafe. We keep a backup day, watch the forecast with you and wrap everything against wet snow. For a move out of Shimla we wait for a clear spell of two or three days.
I am being transferred out of the Secretariat. Can you work to my quarters handover?
Yes. Once we know the day the quarters go back and the day you join, packing and loading are slotted between them. For the claim, the goods list runs item by item and the GST bill follows the department's format. If the new posting is Dharamshala or Mandi, that end usually has its own hill carry, and both are planned together.
Can a vehicle reach a house near the Mall?
Not to the door. The Mall and the Ridge are closed to vehicles and the nearby roads need a permit, so goods go on foot to the nearest road a vehicle may use. With a full household that can be a long walk, and the crew is sized for it. We map the route over a video call before giving a figure.
