Satara sits at the foot of Ajinkyatara, and the oldest part of the city climbs its lower slope. The peths around the old Rajwada are two and three storey houses on steep, narrow streets, some with a flight of steps from the road to the front door. On flatter ground away from the fort are Sadar Bazar, with its older bungalows and government buildings, and Shahunagar and Godoli, where apartment buildings and row houses have gone up over the last twenty years.

Traffic and timing
Powai Naka and the roads around the bus stand and the Rajwada are busiest in the late morning and the evening, and market days crowd the old town further. From August to October, weekend visitors to the Kaas plateau flowers pass through the city and up the Yavateshwar road, so a weekday move is easier in those months. Ganesh festival processions close parts of the centre for a few evenings.
