Shifting homes in Chandigarh
Chandigarh was planned in sectors, each a neighbourhood with its own market, and the plan still shapes every move. The early sectors in the north, below the Capitol Complex, have large kothis on one and two kanal plots, many of them government houses for officers of Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory. Further south the plots shrink, and the Chandigarh Housing Board built blocks of walk-up flats across the later sectors. Beyond them lie Manimajra, the old village pockets and the colonies at the city's edge.
The city is the capital of two states as well as a Union Territory, so it runs on government. The Punjab and Haryana secretariats, the High Court, PGIMER, Panjab University and a long list of state offices bring officers, doctors, court staff and students, most of them on fixed tenures. Western Command at Chandimandir and the air force station near the airport add service families, and the IT park near Manimajra and the industrial area bring private jobs.
Here the drive is easy and the carry is the work. Roads are wide and parking is simple, but few kothis or Housing Board blocks have a lift, so a first or second floor means every piece goes by hand, and a kothi holds a great deal, from teak almirahs to garden furniture. Packers and movers charges in Chandigarh
The grid makes Chandigarh quick to cross. Sector 8 to Sector 44 is about 8 km, and even Manimajra to Sector 63 is under 15, so a 2 BHK needs one day and a big kothi usually two. The slow points are the chowks at office hours, especially Tribune Chowk and Transport Chowk, and the climb in a Housing Board block. A shift to Mohali, Panchkula or Zirakpur is just as short, and counts as a move within the tricity.

The northern sectors of big kothis and government bungalows with lawns and driveways. The truck comes inside the gate, and packing takes longer than anywhere else in the city.
Sectors 35 to 47
Mid-city and southern sectors with Housing Board flats and smaller houses. Walk-up blocks mean a long stair carry, and residents' cars fill the lanes in front by evening.
Sectors 48 to 51 and 63
Cooperative societies and the newer Housing Board towers, some with lifts. Committees want notice, and the roads towards the airport side are busy at office hours.
Manimajra and the IT Park
The old town of Manimajra beside the Modern Housing Complex and the IT park offices. Old Manimajra's lanes need a pickup, while the housing complex blocks have room for a truck.
Burail, Attawa and the village pockets
Old villages inside the sector grid, packed with PG rooms and small rented flats. The village lanes barely pass a car, so a pickup handles the door.
Sector 12 and Sector 14 campuses
PGIMER and Panjab University quarters and hostels. Campus security clears the vehicle, and the estate office sets the day the keys go back.

Society and building rules
Government houses go back through the estate office of whichever government allotted them, after an inspection and with the electricity and water bills paid, and loading is set for the day before. Housing Board flats and cooperative societies want a note to the association or committee, and a tenant may be asked to show that the owner agrees. Kothi owners usually live close by and want to walk through the house before the security deposit is returned. PGI and university quarters follow the campus estate office.

Where the truck can stand
Parking is rarely the problem. Sector roads are wide, most kothis have a driveway, and there is room for a truck in the lanes in front of the houses. The limit is the rule on heavy trucks, which are not allowed on Chandigarh's internal roads through most of the day. A local move therefore runs on a smaller truck, and a long-distance load may wait for the late evening. Old Manimajra and the villages such as Burail and Attawa have tight lanes where a pickup carries the goods out.

Traffic and timing
Traffic gathers at the roundabouts and light points on the main roads, above all Tribune Chowk, Transport Chowk and the approach to Zirakpur, around 9 am and from 5 pm. Sector markets are busy in the evenings. Transfers and school admissions bunch up in spring and early summer, which fills the calendar in March, April and June. A weekday start, with the loading done by afternoon, is the simplest pattern here.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summers are hot, with May and June near 43°C, so loading is done early. Between July and September heavy rain comes down off the Shivaliks, and low parts of the southern sectors and the roads towards Zirakpur flood after a downpour, so cartons get a plastic layer. Winters are cold, close to freezing at night, with fog on the highways in December and January. February and March, when the gardens are in bloom, and October and November are the gentlest months to move.

Our government house in Sector 7 has to be vacated on transfer. How do you fit the estate office's inspection?
Once the inspection is fixed, send us that date along with the day you join. Packing and loading finish the day before, the house is left empty, and the garden furniture and the outhouse are cleared too. A kothi of that size usually needs two days of packing, so book early. The goods list and GST invoice are made out in the name your department needs for the claim.
Our Housing Board flat is on the second floor with no lift. What changes?
Only the carrying. Cots, almirahs and the dining table come apart inside, and the fridge and washing machine travel down upright on straps. We bring enough people for the stairs, and if a sofa will not clear the landing we spot it at the survey and plan for it. The truck parks right outside, so the ground floor end is quick.
Can you move us from a sector house to a tower in Mohali or Zirakpur?
Yes, and it is a same-day job. Towers in Mohali and on Zirakpur's VIP Road have management offices that book the lift and give a slot, so share their rules when you book. Going from a kothi into a flat usually means leaving some furniture behind, and measuring the new rooms at the survey helps you decide what fits.
