Shifting homes in Thane
Old Thane grew around the station and its lakes, Masunda at Talao Pali and Upvan under the Yeoor hills. Its core in Naupada, along Gokhale Road and in Kopri across the tracks is older four and five storey buildings, many of them now going for redevelopment. Growth since then has run north and west: Vasant Vihar and the Pokhran Roads came next, and then Ghodbunder Road, where towers of twenty and thirty floors stand in gated complexes as far as Kasarvadavali.
Hiranandani Estate and Hiranandani Meadows are townships with their own security, rules and shifting hours, and the bigger Ghodbunder Road complexes behave the same way. Across the creek, Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva are part of the same city and far denser, with buildings close together on narrow roads and lifts that are small or missing. So the address matters more than the flat size, and a 2 BHK on Ghodbunder Road and one in Kalwa are two very different days' work.
Thane has become where Mumbai families go for a bigger flat, and it has its own work at Wagle Estate, in the offices along the Eastern Express Highway and in the IT parks across the creek at Airoli and Ghansoli. Time goes on Ghodbunder Road, which can take an hour end to end at the wrong time of day, on the Kopri bridge for any crossing from the east, and on a township's gate and lift booking, which set their own pace. Moves between Kalwa or Mumbra and the west side take longer than the map suggests because every route crosses the creek.

Society and building rules
Ghodbunder Road and township societies want a written note to the office, advance notice of the vehicle number and the names of the crew, and a booked service lift, and many hold a refundable deposit. The gate pass usually needs the maintenance account settled. Older societies in Naupada and Vasant Vihar ask for a letter to the secretary and may bar shifting on Sundays. Buildings under redevelopment have their own timetable, and the society fixes the date by which everyone must be out.

Where the truck can stand
In the Ghodbunder Road complexes and the townships the truck goes inside and stands near the tower. Old Thane is harder: on Gokhale Road, Ram Maruti Road and around the station there is nowhere to stand once the shops open, so the truck is parked a street or two away and a tempo ferries the cartons across. In Kopri, Kalwa and Mumbra, two-wheelers and autos crowd both edges of the lanes, and a smaller truck is the right choice.

Traffic and timing
Ghodbunder Road carries container traffic between the port and Gujarat, and heavy vehicles are held back from it during parts of the day, so its peaks are long. Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Cadbury Junction and Teen Haath Naka on the Eastern Express Highway back up between 8 and 11 in the morning and again through the evening. A 10 am start, once the morning rush has passed, suits a typical flat. Dahi Handi and the Ganesh immersion days close stretches of Thane West, so we plan around them.

Weather and the months to plan around
Thane takes the full Konkan monsoon from June to September, with heavy rain off the Yeoor hills. Ghodbunder Road breaks into potholes in the rains and slows to a crawl, and low patches near the station and in Kalwa hold water after a hard spell. Humidity stays high through the rains and after, so wooden furniture and mattresses go into the truck wrapped and dry. November to February is cooler and dry, and the best time for a move.

Our Ghodbunder Road society gives us a fixed slot. What if the truck is stuck in traffic?
We plan the day backwards from the slot. The truck sets off early enough to be at your gate before it opens, and for a large flat the packing is done the day before so the loading starts on time. If the society stops shifting at a set hour, the quote says whether a 3 BHK fits the window or needs two days.
We are moving from Mumbai to a bigger flat in Thane. Is that one day?
For a 1 or 2 BHK, yes. From Dadar or Ghatkopar it is 15 to 30 km, and the day is decided by your Mumbai society's hours, the heavy-vehicle restrictions on the city roads and the lift booking at your new building. A 3 BHK coming out of an old Mumbai building with no lift is usually packed the day before.
Can a truck reach our building in Kalwa or Mumbra?
Often only a small one. Many roads there are narrow and lined with parked vehicles, so a tempo carries the goods to the main truck standing on the nearest main road. A video call lets us see the lane beforehand, and the shuttle trips are priced into the quote so the figure holds on the day.
Can you move us into Hiranandani Estate?
Yes. The society office will want a move-in form, the truck number and crew names, and a slot for the service lift, and some towers charge a fee or hold a deposit. The truck is logged at the main gate and directed to your tower. Send us the society's form when you get it and we fill in our part.
