Patiala was once a maharaja's capital, and it still looks the part. Qila Mubarak stands in the middle of the old city, with Adalat Bazaar, Qila Chowk and the lanes towards Sheranwala Gate around it. Much of Patiala lives in independent houses. Patiala has few housing societies, and the paperwork is short. Landlords want the rent settled, the meter read and the keys back, and a tenant on an upper floor should agree the loading hour with the owner below, since the truck blocks the gate. In the newer apartment blocks, the association wants to be told in advance and books the lift for a daytime slot. PSPCL, PLW, university and Cantonment quarters each have an estate office with its own inspection, and the loading is fixed around it.

Where the truck can stand
Colonies such as Model Town, Urban Estate and the Baradari take a 17 ft truck easily, and the main roads towards Rajpura and Sangrur are wide. The walled city is closed to big vehicles in practice, its lanes narrow, lined with stalls and in places one-way. There the truck waits outside a gate and a tempo shuttles. In Tripuri and some older colonies a truck may not fit the street at all, which the survey call settles.

Traffic and timing
Traffic is heaviest at Leela Bhawan, Fountain Chowk, the bus stand and the roads to the university at school and office hours. The bazaars near Qila Mubarak fill from about 11 am. Basant Panchami brings very large crowds to Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, and Navratri fills the roads near the Kali Devi temple on the Mall, so moves near either wait a day. A weekday morning is the calmest time to have a truck at the door.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer in Patiala is dry and hot, with June afternoons often above 42°C, and loading is finished by late morning. The monsoon from July to September brings real rain, and the Badi Nadi can spill into low colonies after a heavy spell, so a move on a flooded road waits for the water to drain.
