Panchkula is Haryana's half of the tricity, planned in sectors like Chandigarh next door but built by HUDA, now HSVP. The older residential sectors, 7 to 12 among them, have kothis on one kanal and smaller plots with gardens, many now split into floors. Across the Ghaggar, Sectors 20 and 21 hold a large share of the city's cooperative group housing societies, and Mansa Devi Complex has more of them on the slope below the temple.
The two kinds of home make for two kinds of move. A kothi is roomy, with a driveway for the truck and a staircase to the first floor, so the crew is planned around the stairs and the sheer amount of furniture. A society flat in Sector 20 has a lift, an elected committee and rules about hours. Panchkula also holds Haryana government offices and the Western Command headquarters at Chandimandir, so government and army transfers come through all year.

Panchkula is a short city. The older sectors to Sector 20 is 5 or 6 km over the Ghaggar, and Pinjore about 20 km up the Kalka road, so a 2 BHK takes a day from start to finish. Moves to Chandigarh or Zirakpur are just as short. The slow points are the Housing Board Chowk and the junctions where Panchkula meets Chandigarh, the Ghaggar crossings, and the queue at a cantonment gate.

Western Command's station, with quarters behind guarded gates. The crew and truck are cleared in advance, and loading follows the handover date.
Pinjore and Kalka
Towns on the road to Shimla, with houses on narrower, sloping lanes towards the Kalka end. A smaller truck often does the last part.

Society and building rules
Cooperative societies in Sector 20 and Mansa Devi Complex are run by elected committees, and the secretary expects a written note and a clear account before giving a daytime lift slot. Tenants should expect the committee to check with the owner. Kothis need only the landlord's word, though in a split house the owner upstairs or downstairs will want the day agreed. Government houses go back to the estate office, and Chandimandir quarters follow the army's own inspection and handover.

Where the truck can stand
Sector roads are broad, and a 17 ft truck can reach nearly every kothi. Parking outside is rarely a problem except near the busier sector markets. The society towers in Sector 20 have internal roads and loading spots. In Mansa Devi Complex the slope and the pilgrim traffic can make stopping harder, and around Kalka the roads narrow and climb, so a smaller vehicle takes the goods up the final slope. Inside the cantonment the truck stands where the gate staff allow.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Panchkula is lighter than in Chandigarh, but the junctions where the two meet, especially the Housing Board Chowk, back up at office hours. The Navratra fairs at Mansa Devi, in spring and autumn, bring very large crowds, and traffic near the temple is diverted for days. Weekends on the Kalka road fill with cars going up to Himachal. For an ordinary move, a weekday morning is the easiest time.

Weather and the months to plan around
Panchkula sits against the Shivaliks and takes the full force of the monsoon in July and August. The Ghaggar and the seasonal streams that cross the city rise fast, and in a bad year they have cut roads and flooded low ground, so we check the route that morning. May and June are hot, near 42°C. Winters are cold, with morning fog on the roads out of the tricity. For a move, the best spells are October to November and February to March.

Our society in Sector 20 has an elected committee. What will it ask for?
Usually a written note to the secretary with the date, proof that the maintenance account is clear, and for tenants the owner's consent. The committee may fix the hours and ask that the lift be protected. The day before, the guards receive our truck's registration and crew list, and we line the lift with padding before anything goes in.
We are posted out of Chandimandir. Can you plan to the quarters handover?
Yes. The gate pass needs the crew list and vehicle number in advance, so send us the posting details as early as you can. Packing and loading are fixed for the day before the quarters are inspected. The claim gets our GST invoice and the full inventory written at packing. A car or bike, if you have one, travels on a carrier.
Can you move us from Panchkula up to Shimla or Solan?
Yes. The hill road beyond Kalka is steep and winding, so we send a truck that takes the bends comfortably, often smaller than one used on the plains, and heavy pieces are packed to take the sway. Many hill houses sit below the road down a flight of steps, which we check at the survey. Solan is a same-day move, and Shimla usually is.
