Shifting homes across Haryana
Haryana wraps around Delhi on three sides, and many of its people live in the ring of towns that grew with the capital: Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Bahadurgarh and Palwal. Past that ring the state changes character. The GT Road towns of Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra and Ambala run north towards Punjab, Panchkula sits under the Shivalik hills beside Chandigarh, and the west, around Rohtak, Hisar and Sirsa, is flat, dry farm country along the Rajasthan border.
In the NCR belt, a move is decided by the building: the society's permissions, the service lift, the slot at the loading bay and the hours when goods vehicles may enter Delhi. North and west of it the same household becomes a different job. Towns like Karnal, Hisar and Sirsa are mostly independent houses in planned sectors or older mohallas, with no facility office to deal with and often no lift, so the hours go into staircases, heavy furniture and narrow lanes.
Work draws people from all over India. Gurugram has the offices of Cyber City and Golf Course Road and the Maruti plants at Gurugram and Manesar, Faridabad its engineering units, Panipat its textile mills and refinery, and Sonipat its private universities. Ambala and Hisar have large cantonments, and Rohtak and Hisar draw students to their universities and medical colleges. Homes and buildings
Gurugram, Faridabad and the newer sectors of Sonipat hold the state's high-rise societies, next to builder floors of four storeys that were once single houses. Most other towns were laid out by HUDA, now HSVP, in numbered sectors of plotted houses, usually two or three storeys with an internal staircase and a front gate. Around those sectors are the older bazaars and mohallas, with tight lanes and shops at street level. Panchkula's sectors are green and quiet, and Ambala and Hisar add cantonment bungalows and army quarters.

Between cities
Four national highways leave Delhi through Haryana and carry most moves inside it. NH 44, the GT Road, runs north through Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal and Ambala. NH 48 heads south-west past Gurugram, Manesar and Dharuhera towards Jaipur, NH 19 goes south through Faridabad and Palwal, and NH 9 runs west through Bahadurgarh, Rohtak and Hisar to Sirsa. The KMP Expressway loops round Delhi from Kundli to Palwal, so a truck between Gurugram and Panipat, or Faridabad and Rohtak, can stay clear of Delhi's daytime limits on goods vehicles. The whole state is flat.

Moving into or out of Haryana
Household goods you own and are moving for yourself are not a sale, so a load leaving or entering Haryana goes with a packing list and your declaration, with no e-way bill needed in the usual case. Cars follow the 12-month rule: if yours will be based in another state for longer than that, it must be registered there, beginning with an NOC from the Haryana registering authority that issued its HR number. Staff of central government, the forces and private firms that operate in at least four states can opt for a BH series plate. In the NCR districts, older diesel and petrol cars also face age limits, so check before bringing one in.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer is long and harsh. From late April to June the west of the state, around Hisar and Sirsa, often passes 45°C and dusty winds blow through the afternoons, so the crew starts loading soon after sunrise. July brings the monsoon, which is moderate, but a heavy spell floods the underpasses of Gurugram and Faridabad for hours. After Diwali, smoke and smog settle over the NCR, and at the strictest stage of the winter pollution plan trucks entering Delhi are restricted. Dense fog on NH 44 and NH 9 in late December and January slows every long load. The kindest months for a move are February, March and October.

Can a truck get from Gurugram to Panipat or Karnal without going through Delhi?
Yes. The KMP Expressway, also called the Western Peripheral Expressway, runs from Manesar round the west of Delhi to Kundli, where it joins the GT Road. It keeps a loaded truck away from Delhi's restrictions on goods vehicles, so a flat in Gurugram can be loaded in the morning and unloaded in Panipat or Karnal later the same day, depending on its size.
We live in a sector house in Hisar. What decides how long our move takes?
Mostly the stairs and the furniture. Sector houses in Hisar, Rohtak and Karnal are often two or three floors with the family spread across them, a narrow internal staircase and solid wooden beds and almirahs. At the survey we decide which pieces come apart and how many hands the carry needs. Parking is rarely the problem, since sector roads leave room for a truck outside the gate.
Does the winter smog affect a move between Gurugram and Delhi?
It can. When air quality gets very bad, usually in November and December, the NCR's pollution plan moves through stricter stages, and at the strictest one, trucks other than those carrying essentials or running on cleaner fuels and engines are kept out of Delhi. Moves that stay inside Haryana are less affected. For a load going to or from a Delhi address, we check the stage in force the day before and plan the vehicle and timing around it.
How far is a move from Gurugram to Panchkula, and can it be done in a day?
It is about 270 km, most of it on the KMP Expressway and NH 44 past Panipat, Karnal and Ambala. A 2 BHK is normally loaded in Gurugram by midday and unloaded in Panchkula that night or early next morning. Many Panchkula sector houses have a staircase and no lift, so the crew at the unloading end is chosen with that in mind.
