Shifting homes in Lonavala
Lonavala sits at the top of the Bhor Ghat, and much of it was built as a place to spend the rains. Old stone bungalows with sloping roofs stand in wide compounds along the lanes off the highway, many owned by Mumbai families who come up for weekends. Villa schemes have spread over the slopes around Tungarli and out towards Kune and Valvan, and apartment societies cluster near the railway station and in Bhangarwadi, where people who live here all year tend to rent.
A bungalow that stays locked through the week needs a different kind of packing. Damp creeps into cupboards, mattresses and books over the monsoon, so things are aired and checked before they are wrapped, and polished wood gets a layer that keeps moisture off it. Villa approaches are often steep and sometimes unpaved at the last turn, so a 14 ft truck may stop at the scheme gate while a smaller vehicle climbs. Flats near the station are simpler, with a stair or a small lift and a road outside.
INS Shivaji, the navy's marine engineering training establishment, brings officers and sailors on postings, and the railway keeps staff at the station and on the ghat section. Hotels and resorts employ cooks, managers and housekeeping staff who follow the work, and the Kaivalyadhama yoga institute has teachers and long-stay students. Retired couples from Mumbai settle into a bungalow bought years earlier, while local families often leave for a bigger town once the children reach college age.

Lonavala and Khandala together are about 6 km end to end, and a move from a flat in Bhangarwadi to a bungalow at Tungarli is a short drive. The hours go on the hill: a steep drive, a pickup shuttling up to a villa, and in the rains a pause while a load is covered. A 2 BHK usually moves in a day. The bazaar and the old highway
Chikki shops and hotels line the old highway through town, and parking vanishes on weekends. Loading here is done on a weekday morning, with a smaller vehicle for the side lanes.
Khandala
Bungalows on the edge of the ghat, some reached by drives too steep for a loaded truck. Cloud on the ghat in July can delay an early start.
Tungarli and the lake side
Villas and older bungalows on narrow roads above the Tungarli lake. The gradients turn slippery in the rains, and a pickup often makes the final climb.
Bhangarwadi and Nangargaon
Apartment societies and rented flats for people who live in Lonavala all year. Expect stairs or a small lift, and a street outside that a 14 ft truck can normally stop on.
INS Shivaji and the Bhushi road
Navy quarters behind a guarded gate, where security clears the truck and every crew member beforehand. On monsoon weekends the road past Bhushi dam jams with visitors.
Kusgaon and Valvan
Newer villa schemes and bungalows on the expressway side of town, with wider roads outside but long private drives inside some gated plots.

Society and building rules
Villa schemes and gated bungalow plots have a security cabin and often a managing office, and both want the date, the truck number and a note from the owner before anything leaves. A tenant moving out of a bungalow should settle the electricity and water bills and walk through the house with the owner or caretaker, since many owners live in Mumbai and are not there on the day. The apartment societies ask for notice to the secretary and cleared dues. Navy and railway quarters go back after an inspection on a fixed date.

Where the truck can stand
The old highway through town and the main road to Khandala take a full-size truck. Beyond them it depends on the slope. Lanes above Tungarli and several Khandala drives are narrow, steep and sharply bent, so the truck waits on level ground and a pickup or tempo makes short runs up. Where a bungalow is reached by steps from the road, the crew carries. Before quoting we like to see the approach on video, because a hill road that looks harmless on a map can hide a bend no truck will take.

Traffic and timing
Weekends set the rhythm. From Friday evening to Sunday night, and on every long weekend, the old highway through the bazaar crawls, and in the monsoon the roads to Bhushi dam, Tiger Point and the Khandala viewpoints can stand still for an hour. Moves are best planned from Monday to Thursday with an early start. Christmas week and New Year's Eve bring the same crowds in winter. A load going down the ghat towards Mumbai is timed to miss the Sunday evening rush on the expressway.

Weather and the months to plan around
Lonavala is among the wettest towns in Maharashtra. From June to September rain can fall for days together, cloud sits on the ghat, and on the Khandala side a driver may see only a few metres ahead. Cartons are lined with plastic, sofas and mattresses get a waterproof layer under the stretch film, and the open tail of the truck stays covered while it fills. Wood and leather that spent the rains in a closed bungalow may already carry mould, which we point out before packing. October to March is dry and cool, and the easy season.

Can a truck reach a villa on the hill roads above Tungarli?
Often not to the door. At the survey we check how steep the drive is, how tight its last bend, and whether it is paved all the way up. Where a loaded 14 ft truck cannot climb safely, it stays on level ground and a pickup runs the goods up in several trips. A sofa or an almirah may be carried by hand over the steepest part, and all of it is written into the quote.
Is it sensible to move in Lonavala during the monsoon?
If your date is fixed, yes, with more care and a longer day. Each carton gets a plastic lining, a sheet is kept over the truck as it fills, and carrying stops whenever a heavy burst comes through. Hill roads get slippery, so a smaller vehicle does more of the climbing. If you can choose, move between October and May, and on a weekday.
