Shifting homes in Jammu
Jammu sits on hills above the Tawi. The old city, around Raghunath Bazaar, Pacca Danga and Kachi Chawni, is built on the high bank, with narrow lanes, flights of steps and old houses of several storeys. Across the river the newer city spreads over flatter ground: Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Nanak Nagar and Channi Himmat are colonies of two and three storey houses with a gate and a flat roof, and Sainik Colony and Greater Kailash reach further out. Apartment blocks are few but multiplying along the bypass.
The two halves ask for different moves. Up in the old city, the truck is left on the nearest broad road and everything is carried, often down steep steps and through doorways that force a wardrobe or a double bed to come apart. The colonies are simpler, with the truck at the gate and one staircase inside, but the houses are large and hold years of furniture, so packing is the long part. A floor let to tenants is common here, and plenty of moves are simply one rented floor to another across town.
Jammu is a garrison city. Nagrota, Satwari, Sunjwan, Kaluchak and Akhnoor hold large army formations, and postings in and out never stop. The Civil Secretariat, the High Court at Janipur, the University of Jammu, the Government Medical College, the new AIIMS at Vijaypur, IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu bring officers, doctors and teachers. The Bari Brahmana and Gangyal industrial areas employ plant staff, and pilgrims bound for Vaishno Devi keep the hotels full. Families leave for Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab, and the young go south for jobs.

Packers and movers charges in Jammu
Jammu is more spread out than it looks. The old city to Channi Himmat is about 8 km across the Tawi, and Janipur to Sainik Colony nearer 15 km, but either is a comfortable day for a 2 BHK. The time goes at the Tawi bridges, Bikram Chowk and the Satwari crossing at office hours, and up on the old city hill, where each carton leaves by hand. Large colony houses, with a terrace room and a store full of trunks, often need an early start or a second morning.

Narrow lanes and steep steps on the hill above the Tawi. The truck waits on a main road, and the crew carries goods down, often a fair distance.
Gandhi Nagar and Bahu Plaza
An established colony beside a busy commercial centre. The roads are wide, but shoppers' parking around Bahu Plaza squeezes them from late morning.
Trikuta Nagar and Channi Himmat
Big colonies of two and three storey houses with tenant floors. A 17 ft truck manages the wider roads, and a 14 ft one the inner lanes.
Satwari, Sunjwan and Nagrota
Military stations with married quarters and officers' housing. The vehicle and crew need clearance days ahead, and the handover date fixes the loading.
Janipur and Talab Tillo
Residential areas on the north side near the High Court, with narrow approach roads and slopes that limit the size of truck.

Society and building rules
Much of Jammu lives in independent houses or single floors of them, and it is the owner you settle up with, usually after a walk round the rooms and a final meter reading. The few apartment societies want notice and dues cleared. Army quarters at Satwari, Sunjwan, Nagrota and Kaluchak need the gate pass and a handover inspection, and government housing is returned through the estates department. If you rent a floor with the owner living below, agree the day and the use of the shared staircase with them beforehand.

Where the truck can stand
Across the Tawi the colonies are generous, with space for a 17 ft truck on the main roads and a 14 ft truck on the inner ones. The old city is the opposite: lanes around Raghunath Bazaar and Pacca Danga are narrow, steep and often stepped, and no vehicle reaches many doors. There the truck stands on a main road and the crew carries. Military stations park the vehicle wherever the gate staff say, which can be some way from the quarters, and we plan the crew for that walk.

Traffic and timing
Jammu's traffic peaks at the Tawi bridges, Bikram Chowk, Satwari and Gandhi Nagar at office hours, and trucks face daytime restrictions on the city's busier roads. During the Amarnath Yatra in July and August, pilgrim convoys leave the base camp at Bhagwati Nagar before dawn and roads on their route are held, and Navratri brings crowds heading for Katra and Vaishno Devi. Heavy moves are loaded early in the morning, ahead of both the heat and the traffic.

Weather and the months to plan around
Jammu's summer is harsh. May and June afternoons often pass 42°C, and the inside of a loaded truck standing in the sun gets far hotter, so packing starts at dawn and electronics stay indoors until the last moment. July and August bring humid heat and heavy showers that flood low roads and send the Tawi high. Winters are mild by northern standards, with cool days and foggy mornings in December and January. For an easy move, look at October, November, February or March.

Our house is up a flight of steps near Raghunath Bazaar. Can it be moved?
Yes, by hand for the last part. The lanes are steep and too tight for a truck, so it waits on the closest main road and the crew carries everything down, with wardrobes, beds and tables opened up in the rooms. We look at the lane and the steps on a video call before quoting, and the carry is written into the price.
I have been posted out of Nagrota. Can you work to my handover and reporting dates?
Yes. Send us both dates and the gate requirements, leaving time for the pass to be issued. Packing is finished before the quarters inspection, and the claim gets an item list with a GST invoice. Your car or bike is loaded on a carrier and follows on its own.
Should we avoid a May or June move in Jammu?
Not if the date is fixed, though it is hard on people and on goods. In May and June the crew begins at first light and tries to have the truck closed up before 11 am, and televisions, fridges and polished furniture are kept out of the sun. On a long move the truck covers ground in the cooler hours where it can. If you have a choice, October or March is much gentler.
Can you move us from Jammu to Srinagar?
Yes. It is about 250 km on the highway through the Chenani and Banihal tunnels, usually a day's drive when the road is clear. Snow and landslides around Ramban and Banihal can close it, most often in winter and during heavy rain, so the delivery comes as a window. In winter, plan the unloading in Srinagar for the short daylight hours.
