Moving in Ludhiana

Shifting homes in Ludhiana

Ludhiana is Punjab's biggest city and its busiest workshop. Hosiery and knitwear units, bicycle makers, auto part suppliers and machine tool shops fill the Focal Point estates, Giaspura and Dhandari, and the wholesale trade runs out of Chaura Bazaar, Ghumar Mandi and the lanes around the Clock Tower. Punjab Agricultural University, the veterinary university and the DMC and CMC hospitals add teachers, doctors and students to the business families and factory staff.

Homes here come in very different sizes. Sarabha Nagar, BRS Nagar, Model Town and the Urban Estates are kothis on large plots, often with a basement, two kitchens and furniture bought to last a generation. Around the old markets, families live above their shops in narrow houses four storeys high. Near the factories, workers rent single rooms in vehras, rows of rooms around a shared yard. Towers and gated colonies keep spreading along Pakhowal Road, Ferozepur Road and the Southern Bypass.

A kothi move is heavy work. Double beds with storage boxes, sheesham sideboards, steel almirahs, bedding trunks and a room of winter clothes all come out, and a large house is packed over two days. Tower flats are lighter and run on the society's lift booking. Plenty of moves inside the city go one way, from a crowded old city house out to a kothi or a flat in the newer colonies, and job moves take people on to Chandigarh and Delhi NCR.

Packers and movers charges in Ludhiana

Ludhiana stretches a long way along the GT Road and Ferozepur Road. Model Town to Sarabha Nagar is about 5 km, while Focal Point to a tower on Pakhowal Road is closer to 15 km and can eat an hour if it meets the office rush. A 2 BHK flat moves in one day. A family kothi with a basement usually needs a day of packing before the loading day. The Clock Tower, Jagraon Bridge and Bharat Nagar Chowk are where a loaded truck loses its time.

Where we work

Areas we cover in Ludhiana

Say which corner or junction you are near and we will know what the truck is dealing with.

  • Sarabha Nagar and BRS Nagar

Large kothis on wide, tree-lined blocks. There is kerb space for a 17 ft truck outside most of them, and the day is spent on heavy furniture and basements full of trunks.

  • Model Town and Model Town Extension

Older kothis with upper floors let out as flats. The market roads fill by evening, so loading starts in the morning and the truck leaves before the shoppers arrive.

  • Pakhowal Road and Ferozepur Road

Newer towers and gated colonies running out past the Southern Bypass. Service lifts and booked slots, and slow traffic at the canal bridges at office time.

  • Dugri and Urban Estate Dugri

A large planned area of PUDA houses and builder floors. With cars along both kerbs the inner roads shrink to one lane, and anyone above the ground floor gets a staircase carry.

  • Chaura Bazaar, Field Ganj and the old city

Tight lanes packed with shoppers, handcarts and rickshaws. A tempo ferries goods out from first light, with the big truck parked on the nearest broad street.

  • Focal Point, Giaspura and Dhandari

Industrial estates beside the GT Road with workers' rooms around them. The roads take a big truck, but shift changes and lorries slow the approach.

Local know-how

Before moving day in Ludhiana

  1. 01

    Society and building rules

Ludhiana has fewer society offices than a metro, and the paperwork depends on where you live. Towers on Pakhowal and Ferozepur roads want a written note to the management, dues cleared and a lift slot booked, and a few take a refundable deposit. In the Urban Estates and Model Town the landlord often lives downstairs, so square up the rent, the power bill and the water charges with them first. PAU and hospital hostel rooms are cleared on a date the warden gives.

  2. 02

    Where the truck can stand

A 17 ft truck reaches most kothis in Sarabha Nagar, BRS Nagar and the Urban Estates. It will not get far into Chaura Bazaar, Field Ganj or the older parts of Civil Lines, where the lanes are narrow and full from mid morning, so a tempo shuttles to the truck parked on a wider road. In Dugri and Model Town, parked cars lining the inner roads can box a truck in, and it helps to ask the neighbours to leave a gap that morning. Near Focal Point the truck loads off the GT Road, never on it.

  3. 03

    Traffic and timing

Heavy goods vehicles are barred from central Ludhiana through large parts of the day, and a full-size truck fits its runs around the permitted windows. Traffic is worst at the Clock Tower, Jagraon Bridge, Bharat Nagar Chowk and Samrala Chowk, and the markets fill from about 11 am. PAU's Kisan Mela in March and September jams Ferozepur Road for two days. Diwali shopping blocks the old city for a fortnight, and nagar kirtans on gurpurab days close roads for an afternoon.

  4. 04

Weather and the months to plan around

May and June are fierce, with afternoons that reach 45°C and dust in the wind, so the crew packs from 6 am and the loading is wrapped up before the afternoon sun is at its fiercest. July and August bring downpours that flood underpasses and low roads for hours, and furniture gets a plastic layer under the wrap. December and January are cold, with fog thick enough to slow any load leaving the city. February, March, October and November are the comfortable months, though smoke from burning paddy stubble can hang over the city in early November.

FAQs

Moving in Ludhiana: your questions

The questions not covered here are usually the useful ones. Call or message and we will answer properly.

Can you move a family kothi in Sarabha Nagar with a full basement?

Yes. At the survey we walk through every floor, the basement, the store and the terrace, because those decide the truck size more than the bedroom count does. Storage beds are emptied, almirahs unloaded and wrapped, and heavy sideboards opened where they come apart. A house of that size usually takes one day of packing and a second for loading, and the written quote spells that out.

I live near Chaura Bazaar. Will the truck reach my house?

Not in the lane itself. The truck is parked on the closest wide road before the shutters go up, and a tempo makes several runs between your door and the truck while the crew handles the heavy pieces on the stairs. Old city houses have steep stairs, so a sofa or a double bed may be taken apart upstairs. Starting at first light saves hours.

I am a student leaving PAU or DMC. Can you move a hostel room?

Yes. A hostel room at PAU usually comes down to a cot, a cooler, textbooks and some cartons. For a room bound for another state, ask us to look for spare space on a truck already booked in that direction. It works out cheaper, the goods take longer to arrive, and whether such a truck is running in your week is something we check but cannot promise. Book early at the end of term.

Will a Ludhiana to Chandigarh or Mohali shift fit in one day?

Yes. It is about 100 km, a little over two hours, so a Ludhiana flat loaded by 10 am is usually being unpacked in the tricity before dark. The towers there work to fixed shifting hours and most want the crew list in advance, so share the new building's move-in rules at the time of booking and the drive is timed to match.

What do packers and movers charge in Ludhiana?

On our rate card a local move inside Ludhiana costs ₹10,000 to ₹13,500 for a 1 BHK, ₹12,000 to ₹16,500 for a 2 BHK and ₹17,000 to ₹21,500 for a 3 BHK. A 2 BHK going from Ludhiana to Mumbai, about 1,700 km, is ₹28,000 to ₹36,500. Where your home lands in that range depends on floors, lifts and how much we pack.
