The town itself lives off farming and trade. Karnal sits in Haryana's rice belt, and basmati mills, grain traders and farm equipment dealers keep it busy. Families mostly live in houses on plots, in Model Town and in HUDA sectors such as 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 13, with a floor often let to tenants. Group housing towers have come up near NH 44 and on the edges of the city, and the old city keeps its narrow lanes and houses with shops in front.
For a move this means two things. Most homes are independent houses with a staircase, a lot of solid wood furniture and a store room, so packing takes longer than the drive. And many households are on a transfer, with an estate office, a quarters inspection and a reimbursement claim that all need the paperwork right. Society and building rules
Independent houses need little paperwork. Agree the date with the landlord, pay the final month's rent, note the meter readings, and let whoever lives downstairs know the staircase will be busy for a morning. The few group housing societies want to hear from you some days ahead, with the maintenance account clear, and give a daytime lift slot. Research institutes and the medical college run their quarters through an estate office, where the house is inspected, fittings are checked against a list and the keys go back on a set date, so we load on the eve of that date.

Where the truck can stand
Across the HUDA sectors and Model Town a 17 ft truck reaches the gate without trouble, and on the campuses the roads are wide once the vehicle is cleared. The old city lanes are too tight for anything but a pickup, and cars stopped in front of shops block them further from late morning. On GT Road a truck cannot stand on the main carriageway, so for a house facing the highway we load off the service road or round the corner.

Traffic and timing
Traffic builds on GT Road at Namaste Chowk, Nirmal Kutiya Chowk and near the bus stand at office and school hours, and in the evening around Model Town's market. The paddy harvest in October and November fills the grain market approaches with tractor trolleys, and the wheat season does the same in April. Institute moves bunch up in June and July, when postings and admissions coincide. Outside those weeks, pick a weekday and start early.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summers are harsh, with May and June touching 44°C and hot winds by noon, so loading is done early and electronics stay indoors until the last minute. Between July and September, heavy spells waterlog low roads for a few hours at a time. In late autumn, smoke from burning stubble can hang over the fields. The cold of December and January brings dense fog to NH 44, slowing every load that leaves at night or dawn. February, March and early October are the easiest months.

The big truck parks where the road opens out, and a pickup small enough for the lane shuttles from your door while the heavy pieces come down the narrow stairs on the crew's shoulders. Does the paddy season affect a move?
Near the grain market, yes. In October and November tractor trolleys queue on its approach roads from early morning, and the lanes around it are slow all day. A move elsewhere in the city is hardly touched, but if your address is close to the market, a Sunday or a very early start makes the day far easier.
Can Karnal to Delhi be done in a single day?
The road is about 130 km, and a household loaded in the morning reaches the city by afternoon. Delhi does not let a full-size truck in until late evening, so unloading happens that night, or after sunrise if your new building will not allow a late move.
