Shifting homes in Siliguri
Siliguri sits where the plains end and the hills begin, and it has grown fast along its main roads. Sevoke Road, Hill Cart Road and Burdwan Road carry most of the newer apartment buildings, usually four to eight storeys with a small lift. Older neighbourhoods like Hakimpara, Ashrampara and Deshbandhu Para are independent houses and walk-ups on narrow lanes, and Matigara has planned townships. Around the city are the army at Sukna and Bengdubi and the air force at Bagdogra, each with its own quarters.
Moves here often have a hill end to them. A family coming down from Darjeeling, Kurseong or Kalimpong, or an officer posted up to Gangtok, cannot use a full-size truck on the hill roads, so the load travels in a smaller vehicle, and at many hill houses the last part is carried up or down steps from the road. That leg is planned and priced on its own. On the plains, damp is the thing to pack against, since Siliguri is one of the wettest cities in West Bengal.
The city lives on trade. Goods for Sikkim, Bhutan, Nepal and the north east pass through its markets, tea gardens surround it, and timber and tourism add to the mix. Inside Siliguri the distances are short. Hakimpara to Matigara is about 8 km and Sevoke Road to Bagdogra about 15 km, so a 2 BHK in town is done in a day. The day gets longer on Hill Cart Road and around Darjeeling More, where buses, shared jeeps and hill traffic stack up. A move up to Kurseong or down from Darjeeling is a different kind of day altogether: slow on the bends, done with a smaller vehicle, and started early so the unloading finishes before dark.

Sevoke Road
The longest stretch of new flats and showrooms. Loading from the main road is quick only before the shops open, and the service lanes behind are narrow.
Hakimpara and Ashrampara
Older independent houses and walk-ups on lanes where two cars barely pass. Goods go out to the main road in a small vehicle, a few trips at a time.
Pradhan Nagar and Darjeeling More
Close to the bus terminus and Siliguri Junction, with constant buses and shared jeeps heading for the hills. Early starts are the only easy ones here.
Matigara and Uttorayon
Planned township living near the City Centre mall, with wide internal roads and a maintenance office that issues the gate pass.
Sukna and Bengdubi
Army cantonment quarters. The posting order and the handover date fix the move, and the gate needs the truck and crew cleared beforehand.
Bagdogra
Air force families and newer houses near the airport, most with space at the gate for a big truck. Highway traffic towards the Nepal border builds through the day.

Society and building rules
Apartment buildings along Sevoke Road and Burdwan Road usually have a small owners' association that wants to know the date and asks for dues to be settled. Some fix shifting hours and keep the lift for residents until the move is booked. The Matigara townships run a proper maintenance office with passes. Defence quarters at Sukna, Bengdubi and Bagdogra are handed back on a set date, and a civilian vehicle and crew need gate entry arranged first, so we ask for those details early.

Where the truck can stand
On the plains the question is lane width. The main roads take a full truck, but the older paras and the market area around Bidhan Market and Mahabirsthan do not, and a small vehicle brings the load out. On the hill roads a full-size truck is the wrong vehicle for a house move: the bends, the narrow stretches and the lack of parking at the top all favour something smaller. At hill houses set above or below the road, the crew carries on the steps.

Traffic and timing
Siliguri's traffic runs on the hill and border trade. Hill Cart Road, Sevoke Road and the stretch around Darjeeling More are slowest from late morning, and trucks for Sikkim and the north east fill the highways in the evening. We start early and try to have a town move unloaded by the afternoon. October brings Durga Puja and the start of the tourist season, followed by Kali Puja and Diwali, and those weeks are the busiest on the roads, so book them well ahead.

Weather and the months to plan around
Siliguri gets far more rain than Kolkata, the bulk of it from June to September, and the air stays damp for weeks. Cartons are lined, mattresses and sofas go under plastic, and wooden furniture is wiped dry before it is wrapped. The monsoon is also when landslides close the roads to Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim, sometimes for days, so a hill move in those months needs a flexible date. Winter mornings are cool and misty. The months that give the least trouble are October, November, February and March.

Can you move our household from Darjeeling down to Siliguri?
Yes. The load comes down in a smaller vehicle suited to the hill road, and where the house sits above or below the road, the crew first carries everything on the steps. Heavy furniture is taken apart before it leaves the house. It is planned as its own leg with its own price, and in the monsoon we keep the date loose in case a landslide shuts the road.
I am posted out of Sukna. What do you need for the cantonment?
The handover date for the quarters, a contact at the unit who can clear civilian entry, and the date you report at your next station. The truck number and the names of the crew go to the gate a day or two ahead. The inventory and the GST invoice can follow the format your unit uses, which makes the transfer claim simpler.
Is the monsoon a bad time to shift in Siliguri?
For a move within town it is manageable, with extra plastic under the outer wrap and the truck loaded under cover where possible. For a move to or from the hills it is the riskiest season, because the roads to Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok close after landslides.
