Shifting homes across West Bengal
West Bengal stretches from the Bay of Bengal to the Himalaya, and moves here fall into three broad areas. The south is greater Kolkata on both banks of the Hooghly, with Howrah, Salt Lake, New Town and the old mill towns up and down the river. To the west lies the Durgapur and Asansol belt of steel, coal and power, reached through the rice country around Bardhaman. North, past the Farakka Barrage and Malda, is north Bengal, with Siliguri, the Dooars tea gardens and the hills of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The work changes with the area. In Kolkata the carry is the job: walk-up promoter flats, old houses behind narrow lanes, and towers with booked lifts in New Town. Durgapur, Burnpur and Chittaranjan are company towns of plant quarters on wide roads, where the work is getting the quarters cleared and handed back on time. Kharagpur's railway settlement and the IIT campus run the same way. Around Siliguri, any move up into the hills changes the vehicle and the day.
Jobs move people in and out in every direction. Kolkata has the IT campuses in Salt Lake and New Town, the port, the railway zones and Coal India, and Eastern Command's headquarters in Fort William. Durgapur Steel Plant, IISCO at Burnpur and Eastern Coalfields bring engineers and their families to the west, Kharagpur has its air force station at Kalaikunda, and the Siliguri corridor is thick with defence postings. Homes and buildings
Kolkata's housing runs from courtyard houses in the north, with wooden stairs and very tall doors, through the three and four storey promoter flats of the south, many without lifts, to plotted houses in Salt Lake and towers in New Town and along the EM Bypass. Howrah is denser still. Bardhaman and the smaller towns are mostly two storey family houses. The steel, coal and railway towns are rows of company quarters, and Siliguri has mid-rise flats on its main roads, with hill houses above it reached by steps from the road.

Between cities
NH 19 starts near Dankuni and runs north-west through Bardhaman, Durgapur and Asansol, and its Durgapur Expressway section makes that stretch quick. NH 16 heads south-west to Kharagpur and on into Odisha. North Bengal is reached on NH 12 through Krishnanagar, Baharampur and Malda, crossing the Ganga at Farakka, and it is the slowest of the three, a long day or more to Siliguri. Around Kolkata, the Hooghly crossings at Vidyasagar Setu and Nivedita Setu carry the heavy traffic and back up at peak hours. Above Siliguri, the hill roads to Darjeeling and Sikkim need smaller vehicles.

Moving into or out of West Bengal
Moving your own household within India is not a sale, and used personal goods going into or out of West Bengal normally need no e-way bill, only a detailed packing list and a declaration that they belong to you. For a car, the 12-month rule applies: kept longer than that in another state, it has to be registered there, starting with a no objection certificate from the RTO that issued its WB number. BH series plates are open to defence and government staff and to employees of firms with offices in at least four states. A transfer paid for by the employer has its GST invoice made out to the company.

Weather and the months to plan around
The south is hot and humid from April to June, with evening nor'westers, the kalbaishakhi, bringing wind and sometimes hail. Rain sets in during June and lasts through September, flooding low roads in Kolkata and Howrah after a heavy burst, while north Bengal gets far more rain and landslides can shut the hill roads for days. The cyclone months on the Bay of Bengal are May and October to December, and a warning can hold a truck for a day or two. Durga Puja fills the roads for most of a week. The months from November to February give the fewest problems across the state.

How long does a move from Kolkata to Siliguri take?
The road is about 570 km on NH 12, through Krishnanagar, Baharampur, Farakka and Malda. A household packed and loaded in Kolkata on the first day is normally unloaded in Siliguri on the second or third, depending on traffic at Farakka and north of Malda. You get a consignment number to follow the truck, and a car, if there is one, travels separately on a carrier.
Can you take our household on from Siliguri to Gangtok?
Yes. The load goes up NH 10 beside the Teesta in a smaller truck that can take the bends, and where the house sits off the road, up or down steps, the last part goes on foot. Indian citizens need no permit for Gangtok, though north Sikkim and Nathu La do require one. Landslides close the Teesta road often in the rains, so between June and September the date is kept loose by a few days.
Which weeks of the year are hardest for a move in Bengal?
Durga Puja, when pandals take over roads and lanes across the state for about five days and crowds stay out all night, followed closely by Kali Puja and Diwali. In north Bengal the same weeks open the tourist season in the hills. The heaviest monsoon weeks of July and August come next, especially for anything involving Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Sikkim. With a flexible date, November to February is far easier.
We are moving from Howrah to Salt Lake. Can it be done in a day?
Yes, for most homes up to 3 BHK. The drive is about 15 km, depending on which bridge the truck takes, and most of the time goes on the carry at each end and on the river crossing. We aim to cross before the morning office traffic or after it eases. Our Dankuni office handles Howrah and Kolkata alike, so the survey and quote come from the same place.
