Shifting homes in Deoghar
Deoghar has two kinds of old housing. Around Baba Mandir, the lanes are lined with priests' houses, lodges and dharamshalas built wall to wall for pilgrims. In Castairs Town, Williams Town and the areas towards Jasidih, Bengali families built spacious villas a century ago, when Deoghar was a place to come for the air, and many still stand in large compounds, some kept up and some half closed. Newer houses and a few apartment blocks now fill the gaps and line the roads out of town.
The villas are big, with high ceilings, heavy furniture and outbuildings, and an owner who comes from Kolkata to close one up often has decades of belongings to sort. The survey allows for that. The temple lanes are the opposite problem: small rooms, steep stairs and no way for a vehicle to get close. Newer houses on the edges of town are simple, with a gate and a short carry.
Pilgrimage is the town's biggest business, and hotels, lodges and shops change hands and staff often. AIIMS Deoghar, the new airport and the Deoghar campus of BIT Mesra have brought doctors, faculty and students in recent years, and the Satsang ashram draws devotees who settle nearby. Jasidih, on the main railway line, brings railway staff. People leave Deoghar for work in Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi and Delhi NCR.

Society and building rules
Deoghar has few housing societies. Villa owners and landlords are the ones to agree dates with, and a caretaker may hold the keys for an owner living in Kolkata, so arrange access in advance. Lodges and dharamshalas have managers who will want the move done between guests. Railway quarters at Jasidih and staff housing at AIIMS are returned to their own offices, which inspect them first. The few apartment blocks want to hear in advance and prefer moves in daylight.

Where the truck can stand
The villa areas and the newer colonies have room for a 17 ft truck, and many compounds let it drive in. Around Baba Mandir, pilgrims, shops and cycle rickshaws fill lanes that were never wide, and a truck gets nowhere near, so the goods are carried by hand or taken on a small vehicle to the closest open road. During the mela, the centre runs on a special traffic plan, and goods vehicles are barred from large parts of town.

Traffic and timing
The Shravani Mela runs through the month of Shravan, usually July and August, when kanwariyas walk in from Sultanganj with Ganga water and the town fills far beyond its size. Mondays are the heaviest days. Mahashivratri, with its Shiv Barat procession, and Basant Panchami also bring large crowds. Outside those weeks, traffic is light apart from Tower Chowk at midday, and a weekday morning works well.

Weather and the months to plan around
Deoghar bakes in May, with afternoons around 42°C and a dry wind, and loading is kept to the early hours. The monsoon, from mid June to September, coincides with the mela, which makes July and August the hardest months for a move in every way. Old villas take in damp through the rains, so wood and books are wrapped against it. The cool, dry winter suits a long day of packing, and November to February is the time to choose.

Can I move house during the Shravani Mela?
Near the temple, practically no. For the whole month the centre is given over to pilgrims, goods vehicles are held outside large parts of town, and Mondays are the most crowded. A move in a colony on the edge of town can sometimes work on a weekday, but the roads in and out stay slow. June, or a date after the mela ends, is far simpler.
We are closing a family villa in Castairs Town from Kolkata. Can you handle it?
