Shifting homes in Kolkata
Kolkata's housing changes as you cross it. North Kolkata still has the old family houses of Shyambazar and Bagbazar, built around a courtyard, with wooden stairs, high ceilings and doors taller than any modern wardrobe. South Kolkata, from Ballygunge and Gariahat down to Jadavpur and Behala, is mostly three and four storey buildings put up by local promoters, many of them without a lift. Salt Lake is a planned grid of houses on plots, and New Town, further east, is towers with service lifts.
Each of these asks something different of a move. In a walk-up promoter flat the crew carries everything, so the number of hands matters more than the size of the truck, and a sofa bought for the flat may have come in through the window. An old north Kolkata house tends to hold Burma teak beds and almirahs that have not moved in decades, behind a lane no truck can enter. A New Town tower is the easiest carry in the city and the most paperwork.
People come for the IT offices of Sector V and New Town, for Coal India, the railway headquarters and the port, and on postings to the army's Eastern Command at Fort William. Crossing Kolkata is a short drive and a long day. Salt Lake to Behala is about 20 km, Shyambazar to Gariahat about 10 km, and New Town to Jadavpur close to 20 km, and a 2 BHK covers any of them in a single day. The hours go on the carry up and down promoter-flat stairs, the wait for a lift slot in New Town, and the evening crawl on the EM Bypass. A large north Kolkata house with decades of furniture in it is better packed on day one and loaded on day two.

Shyambazar, Bagbazar and Shobhabazar
Old courtyard houses on lanes too narrow for any truck. A small tempo or a handcart brings the goods out to Bidhan Sarani, where the main truck waits.
Park Street and Camac Street
Older mansion blocks with small, slow lifts on one-way roads. A truck gets a short window at the kerb, so loading starts before the offices open.
Ballygunge, Gariahat and Jodhpur Park
Promoter-built walk-ups of three or four storeys with narrow, turning stairs. Big wardrobes and beds come apart upstairs, and the crew is sized for the carry.
Salt Lake Sectors I to III
Houses on plots along wide, quiet block roads, where the truck parks at the gate. Older houses here often have a steep internal staircase.
New Town and Rajarhat
High-rise complexes with a facility office, a booked service lift and fixed shifting hours. Security at the gate asks for the truck's number and every crew member's name a day ahead.

Society and building rules
Older buildings rarely have a managing office, but most have a flat owners' association, and it helps to tell its secretary the date so the stairs and the ground floor parking are kept clear. The complexes in New Town, Rajarhat and along the Bypass run like offices: a move-out permission once the maintenance is paid, a booked service lift, daytime hours only, and in some a refundable deposit. Tenants are usually asked for a letter from the owner before the facility office will sign the gate pass.

Where the truck can stand
Much of north and central Kolkata was laid out long before anyone drove a truck down it. Lanes off Bidhan Sarani, around College Street and in older Bhowanipore are too narrow to enter, so the truck stands on the main road while a small tempo or a handcart ferries the load. Several central roads run one way in the morning and the other way in the evening, which decides the side of the street the truck can load from. Salt Lake and New Town are the opposite, with room outside almost every door.

Traffic and timing
Goods vehicles are kept off many of Kolkata's main roads through the day, so the big truck for a long move often reaches the house at first light or waits for the evening, while a small tempo does daytime work inside a neighbourhood. Office traffic jams Ultadanga, Chingrighata, the Ruby crossing and Park Circus from about 9 am and again after 5 pm. Durga Puja is the week to avoid: pandals take over lanes and parks, and crowds fill the roads until dawn.

Weather and the months to plan around
April to June is hot and heavy with humidity, and some afternoons a kalbaishakhi storm blows in with wind and sometimes hail, so tarpaulins stay ready at the truck. The monsoon, June to September, floods low roads in north and central Kolkata, around Thanthania and Amherst Street, for hours after a heavy spell. Cyclones from the Bay are a risk in May and again in October and November. Teak furniture and leather sofas left wrapped for days in this damp can grow mould, so we unwrap soon after arrival. November to February is the pleasant stretch.

Kolkata moves tend to be long ones. Young engineers leave for Bangalore and Hyderabad, bank and railway officers go wherever the next transfer sends them, and families follow grown children to Delhi NCR. Nearer home, Durgapur is a day's run and Bhubaneswar an overnight one, and Siliguri is the way through to anything in the north east.

Our house in north Kolkata is down a lane no truck can enter. Can you still move it?
Yes. The main truck parks on the nearest road wide enough to hold it, and a small tempo or a handcart makes the trips down the lane. Heavy teak pieces are taken apart inside the house where they allow it. Anything that will not turn on an old wooden staircase is looked at during the survey, so the crew size and the extra hours are already in the quote.
Can you move us during Durga Puja?
We can, but it is the hardest week of the year to move in Kolkata. Pandals block lanes in both north and south Kolkata, parking disappears, and roads near the big pujas fill with crowds from evening until morning. If your date is flexible, move before Mahalaya or after Lakshmi Puja. If it is not, we plan an early morning slot and check the route around the pandals near you.
