Bihar Sharif is the headquarters of Nalanda district and one of Bihar's oldest towns, known for the Bari Dargah of the Sufi saint Makhdoom Sahab. The old town around the dargah and the bazaars is tightly built, with brick houses on narrow lanes, thick walls and doorways made for another age. Newer colonies have grown along the main roads and the bypass, with independent houses and a few apartment blocks.
That old construction is what to plan for. A modern double bed or a big wardrobe often cannot pass an old doorway in one piece, so it is taken apart outside the room and refitted inside. Stairs are steep and narrow, and many lanes take nothing wider than a handcart. In the newer colonies a truck stands at the gate and none of this applies.
People move here for district postings, for the medical college at Pawapuri, for Nalanda University and the ordnance factory near Rajgir, and for teaching and trade. Many families have property in the district and move back after years away, or leave for Patna and Delhi when work calls. Patna is about 75 km away, close enough for a one-day move.

Very few homes in Bihar Sharif are in managed societies, so there is rarely a permission to get. Speak to the neighbours on your lane, since a handcart and the crew will be passing their doors for a few hours. Official quarters are returned to whichever department allotted them, and medical college quarters at Pawapuri through the institute's office. If you rent, clear the last month and the electricity bill before the move.

The main roads and the bypass take a full truck, and the newer colonies have space at most gates. In the old town the lanes are too narrow and uneven for anything larger than a handcart or a small tempo. The main truck waits at the nearest wide point, and the crew carries or shuttles the load there. Rajgir and Pawapuri have good roads and easy access.

The market and the bus stand are busy from mid-morning to evening, and NH 20 towards Bakhtiyarpur and Patna is slower in the afternoon. Chhath brings big crowds to the town's ponds and river banks. Around Diwali, Jain pilgrims fill Pawapuri, and the Rajgir Malmas Mela, held every few years, draws very large crowds to the hills for a month. Start early for any move inside the old town.

Summers are harsh, with May afternoons often above 42°C and hot winds across the plains, so loading is done early. Monsoon rain is moderate, but between late June and September the old lanes turn to mud and some low roads waterlog. Winter is cold, with dense fog on the Patna road in late December and January that slows trucks until mid-morning. October, November and February are the best months to move.

We can, but it is a hard month to pick. The mela draws very large crowds, traffic into Rajgir is controlled and slow, and the area near the hot springs is packed. If your date is flexible, move before or after it. If not, we plan an early morning arrival and go over the route with you beforehand.
Is a move from Bihar Sharif to Patna done in a day?
Yes. It is about 75 km through Bakhtiyarpur, a couple of hours on the road, so the packing, the drive and the unloading fit into one day. Patna keeps large goods trucks off its main roads for much of the daytime, so a full truck may unload in the evening, depending on the part of Patna you are moving to.
