Shifting homes in Patna
Patna runs along the south bank of the Ganga for more than 20 km, and its housing changes from west to east. Danapur and Saguna More have the newer apartment towers, Bailey Road and Patliputra Colony are bungalows, government quarters and independent houses, and Boring Road and Rajendra Nagar are thick with four and five storey apartment buildings. South of the railway line, Kankarbagh is a vast colony of houses and flats. At the eastern end, Patna City is the old town, with lanes a car cannot enter.
A lot of Patna's apartment buildings were put up by small builders, with a lift that takes four people and a narrow stair beside it, and older houses tend to be full of sheesham and teak that has been in the family for years. That makes a Patna move heavy work. Add the lanes of Patna City, Rajendra Nagar and inner Kankarbagh, where a truck cannot reach the door, and the survey becomes the step that decides the crew, the vehicle and whether a second, smaller one is needed.
As the state capital, Patna sees a large share of its moves follow government postings, along with bank transfers, railway staff of the Danapur division and army families at Danapur Cantonment. Older, closely built houses and flats. The lanes are narrow, and some hold water for days after a heavy monsoon downpour.
Kankarbagh
A very large colony of houses and walk-up flats south of the railway. The main roads take a truck, and the inner lanes need a smaller vehicle.
Patliputra Colony and Bailey Road
Bungalows, government quarters and independent houses with room at the gate. Official residences need the handover date and entry fixed in advance.
Danapur and Saguna More
Newer apartment towers with lifts, next to the cantonment. Army quarters need entry cleared, and Saguna More traffic is heavy in the evening.

The old town around Takht Sri Patna Sahib, with lanes too narrow for any truck. Goods come out by hand or small tempo to the main road.

Society and building rules
Apartment buildings in Patna usually have a residents' society or a caretaker put in by the builder, and they want notice, cleared maintenance and a fixed time for the move. Lifts are small, so the society may ask for anything big to go by the stairs. Government quarters on Bailey Road and in the secretariat colonies go back through the department that allotted them, and army quarters in Danapur through the station's own process, so the loading is fitted around those dates.

Where the truck can stand
Main roads like Bailey Road, Boring Road and the Kankarbagh main road can take a full truck, but it cannot stand on them for long, least of all near shops and coaching centres. The inner lanes of Rajendra Nagar, Kankarbagh and Patna City often cannot take one at all, and there a smaller vehicle or a handcart makes trips from the door. Flyover and metro work closes stretches of road from time to time, so the route is checked the day before.

Traffic and timing
Heavy trucks are barred from Patna's city roads for most of the daytime, so a big truck loads in the early morning or at night, and daytime work inside the city goes in a small vehicle. Ashok Rajpath, Bailey Road, Boring Road and the roads round Gandhi Maidan are worst in office hours. Chhath is the big one: for several days the roads to the Ganga ghats close and the whole city is out. Rallies at Gandhi Maidan can shut the centre at short notice.

Weather and the months to plan around
Patna summers are fierce, with hot, dry westerly winds in May and June and afternoons above 42°C, so the loading is over by mid-morning. Between late June and September the rains waterlog Rajendra Nagar, Kankarbagh and other low areas, and in a flood year the Ganga rises into the riverside colonies. Winter brings cold waves and thick fog from late December into January, which slows long-distance trucks at night. October, November, February and March give the fewest problems.

If you can, move before late June or once the rains ease in late September. If you cannot, we watch the forecast and pick a dry morning, keep everything off the ground on the day, and pack with an extra plastic layer. After a very heavy spell, some lanes in Rajendra Nagar and Kankarbagh stay under water, and we wait for them to clear instead of wading through with your furniture.
Can you move us out of government quarters on Bailey Road on the vacating date?
Yes. Give us the vacating date and the day you join the new posting. A big house is packed a day early, loaded on the vacating day and handed over empty. The GST invoice and inventory follow the format your department asks for, which keeps the transfer claim simple.
When does Chhath get in the way of a move in Patna?
Across the festival's four days, and most of all on the evening and morning of the offerings, roads to the Ganga ghats are closed and the city is packed. We avoid those days for anything near the riverside, and for a move elsewhere in Patna we still start early and keep well away from the ghat roads.
