Homes here are mostly independent houses, often shared by an extended family and filled with generations of furniture, books and brass. Apartment buildings are fewer and sit mostly along the newer roads. Lanes in the old town and in parts of Laheriasarai are narrow, and some wind between ponds, which limits where a truck can stop. Low ground and poor drainage mean the monsoon matters here more than in most towns.
Darbhanga's work is the medical college hospital, the universities, district offices, trade, and the fish and makhana business of Mithila. The airport has made travel easier, and an AIIMS has been planned for the city. A full truck can reach the main roads, the Raj campus and the newer areas around Donar and Benta. It cannot turn into many old town lanes, and some roads between the ponds are too narrow to pass another vehicle, so a small tempo or the crew on foot does the last part. In the monsoon a road's surface matters as much as its width, and a soft verge can trap a loaded truck, so we pick a firm place to stand.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Darbhanga is heaviest from late morning to evening around Tower Chowk, Donar Chowk and the DMCH road, while early mornings are clear. Chhath fills the ponds and their banks for several days, and the roads beside Harahi, Dighi and Gangasagar are closed or crowded. Durga Puja and the winter wedding season bring their own crowds. North Bihar gets heavy monsoon rain from late June to September, and Darbhanga sits in the flood plain of the Bagmati and the Kamla. Winters are cold, and dense fog from late December slows the highways. October to March, avoiding the foggiest weeks, is best.

Our house in the old town is on a lane between two ponds. Can a truck get to it?
Often not the full truck. It stops where the ground is firm and the road wide enough, and a small tempo or the crew on foot brings the goods out. In the monsoon we check the lane a day or two before, because a soft edge beside a pond is no place for a loaded vehicle. The extra carry is in the quote, so nothing comes as a surprise on the day.
Is it risky to move out of Darbhanga in the monsoon?
It can be, in a flood year. The Bagmati and the Kamla can close roads out of the district for days, and the highway to Muzaffarpur and Patna may slow. We follow the flood news and river levels, keep the date flexible, and pack with plastic under the outer wrap. Between October and March the risk falls away.
