Grain lorries slow the Gulabbagh area when the maize harvest comes in, and highway traffic on NH 27 towards Siliguri and Darbhanga is heavy at night. Chhath and Durga Puja crowd the river ghats and the town centre for several days. Winter fog can delay long-distance loads that leave early.

Purnia is wetter than south Bihar, with a long monsoon from June to September and heavy spells that waterlog the lower streets. The Kosi floods parts of the district in some years, closing roads for days. Summers are hot and humid and winters cool and foggy, with the thickest fog from late December into January.
