Shifting homes in Guwahati
Guwahati is squeezed between the Brahmaputra and a ring of hills, and much of the newer city has climbed those hills. Older neighbourhoods such as Uzan Bazar, Pan Bazar, Chandmari and Silpukhuri still have Assam-type houses: single storey, with timber frames, plastered walls and sloping tin roofs, set in small compounds. Along GS Road and in Beltola, Survey, Hatigaon, Rukminigaon and Six Mile, apartment blocks of five storeys and more now fill the skyline, and many newer ones stand on cut hill slopes with steep approach roads.
The hills make the survey matter. A flat in a Hengrabari or Sarumotoria building may sit up a lane too steep for a loaded truck, and the goods come down in a pickup. Older apartment blocks often have a small lift or none, so a double bed and a sofa go down the stairs. An Assam-type house is quick to load, with everything on one floor, but its wooden furniture and cane pieces need careful wrapping against the damp.
Dispur is the state capital, and the secretariat, departments and their officers keep transfers moving. NF Railway's headquarters at Maligaon, the army at Narangi, the refinery at Noonmati, IIT Guwahati and AIIMS on the north bank, Gauhati University at Jalukbari and the medical college bring engineers, doctors and students. Guwahati is also the trading centre for the north east, with the wholesale lanes of Fancy Bazar, and families from across the region settle here. Graduates leave for Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Packers and movers charges in Guwahati
Guwahati is long and narrow, pressed between river and hills. Jalukbari to Khanapara is about 20 km along the city's spine, and Maligaon to Six Mile close to 18 km, so a move across town can take over an hour in a loaded truck. A 2 BHK is usually done in a day. What stretches it are the jams on GS Road, a pickup shuttling down a hill lane, a flat without a lift, and a downpour that leaves the road in front of the building under water.

Beltola, Survey and Hatigaon
Dense apartment areas off GS Road. Lanes are narrow with cars on both sides, and several low stretches go under water after heavy rain.
GS Road, Six Mile and Khanapara
Towers along the main road towards Shillong. Traffic runs heavy all day, so the truck loads fast from a side lane or the building's forecourt.
Uzan Bazar, Pan Bazar and Chandmari
Older neighbourhoods near the river with Assam-type houses and low blocks. The lanes are tight, and a 14 ft truck is the usual limit.
Hengrabari, Sarumotoria and the hill colonies
Flats and houses up steep, winding lanes. A loaded large truck cannot manage the gradient, so a pickup brings goods down to it.
Maligaon and Jalukbari
Railway colonies around the NF Railway headquarters and homes near the university, many on hill slopes. Railway quarters are returned through the railway's own process.
Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar and Zoo Road
Busy central areas known for waterlogging. After a hard downpour the roads can stay flooded for hours, so the moving date watches the forecast.

Society and building rules
A Guwahati housing society will normally expect a note to its secretary some days ahead, a clean maintenance account and a daytime move, and a tenant can be asked to produce a letter from the landlord. Where there is a lift it may need booking, and older blocks share one small one. Railway quarters at Maligaon, army housing at Narangi and the refinery township at Noonmati each follow their own vacating and gate rules, and the loading date is set around the inspection. In a rented Assam-type house the owner usually lives next door, and bills and the deposit are settled with them.

Where the truck can stand
The main roads, GS Road, RG Baruah Road, AT Road and the highway bypass, take a 17 ft truck, though stopping on them is difficult at most hours. Inside colonies such as Beltola, Survey and Chandmari, lanes are narrow with parked cars and sharp bends. On the hills at Hengrabari, Sarumotoria, Kharghuli and Nilachal the gradient is the problem, and a pickup is used. Fancy Bazar's lanes are packed with handcarts and goods vehicles all day, so loading there happens at dawn.

Traffic and timing
GS Road jams at Ganeshguri, Dispur, Six Mile and Christian Basti through office hours, and Maligaon Chariali and Jalukbari back up in the evening. Heavy goods vehicles are kept off most city roads during the day, so a large truck enters early or late. Bohag Bihu in mid April and Durga Puja in October close roads around the pandals and fill the markets, and the Ambubachi Mela in June brings huge crowds to Kamakhya on Nilachal hill. A weekday morning in the dry months is the easiest time to load.

Weather and the months to plan around
Rain is what a Guwahati move plans for. Pre-monsoon storms begin in April, and from May to September heavy showers can flood Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Zoo Road, Rukminigaon and parts of Hatigaon within an hour. Landslides trouble some hill colonies. The air stays humid for months, so wood, leather and mattresses are packed with a moisture layer and nothing is left in a wet carton. Summer afternoons sit near 35°C with sticky air. The dry, pleasant spell from November through February is when moving here takes least effort.

My flat in Hengrabari is up a steep lane. Can a truck reach it?
A loaded large truck usually cannot manage those gradients safely, so it waits on the main road and a pickup brings goods down in several trips. We look at the lane at the survey, on video if you prefer, and the pickup and the extra time appear in the quote as their own lines.
Can we move during the Guwahati monsoon?
Yes, with planning. From May to September a heavy downpour can flood parts of Anil Nagar, Zoo Road or Hatigaon for hours, so we watch the forecast and start early. Everything gets a waterproof layer under the outer wrap, and the path to the truck is covered. A long-distance load gets a wider delivery window, since floods can slow the highway through the Siliguri corridor.

Bangalore is about 3,000 km by road, so the truck spends more than a week on the way, depending on weather and halts. A consignment number lets you follow the truck across the country, and the load is packed for the distance, with wooden crates for fragile pieces at extra cost.
