Shifting homes across Bihar
The Ganga cuts Bihar in two, and whether a move crosses it shapes much of the day. South of the river are Patna, Bihar Sharif, Gaya and Bhagalpur. North of it lie Tirhut and Mithila, with Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga, and further east the Kosi and Seemanchal country around Purnia, flat, fertile and crossed by rivers that come down from Nepal. A few bridges join the two halves, Mahatma Gandhi Setu and JP Setu at Patna and Vikramshila Setu at Bhagalpur among them, and traffic on them sets the pace.
Inside south Bihar a move is mostly a road question, with Patna to Gaya about 100 km and Patna to Bihar Sharif about 75. North Bihar is slower going. A truck from Patna crosses the Ganga first, and beyond Muzaffarpur the roads to Darbhanga and Purnia cross river after river, where a flood can close a stretch for days. Purnia and the Seemanchal towns are also where Bihar meets Bengal and Nepal, and trade and family ties run in every direction.
Bihar sends more people out to work than it draws in, and many moves follow that pattern: graduates and families leaving for Delhi NCR, Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai, and households coming home after years away. Coming in are government officers, bank staff, railway staff of the Danapur, Sonpur and Samastipur divisions, army families at Danapur Cantonment and the Officers Training Academy in Gaya, and doctors and teachers for AIIMS Patna and the universities. Homes and buildings
Outside Patna the usual home is a family house of two or three storeys, built in brick over the years, with a staircase, a roof terrace and sometimes a shop or rented rooms on the ground floor. In north Bihar many are raised above the flood line. Lanes in the older parts of Gaya, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga and Bihar Sharif are narrow enough that a tempo or handcart covers the final few hundred metres. Patna adds apartment buildings from small builders, officers' bungalows and quarters around Bailey Road, and the crowded lanes of Patna City. Furniture everywhere tends to be solid wood and steel, and heavy.

Between cities
In the south-west, the GT Road, now NH 19, passes through Mohania, Sasaram and Aurangabad, and the road from Gaya meets it at Dobhi. NH 27, the east-west corridor, runs across north Bihar through Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga to Purnia. Between Patna and the north, trucks cross the Ganga on Mahatma Gandhi Setu to Hajipur or on JP Setu from Digha to Sonpur, and both queue at busy hours. East along the south bank, the road to Bhagalpur through Mokama and Munger takes longer than its distance suggests.

Moving into or out of Bihar
Used household goods moved by their owner are not a sale, so a clear inventory and a self-declaration travel with the truck, and for a move into or out of Bihar they normally take the place of an e-way bill. The car is the item that needs planning. If it is going to be based in a new state for more than 12 months, it must be registered there, which begins with an NOC from the RTO it is currently registered with. Government and defence staff, and people working for private firms spread over four or more states, can choose a BH series plate and skip that step.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summers are hot and dry, with the loo wind sweeping the plains through May and June and afternoon temperatures past 42°C, so loading is done by mid-morning. The monsoon, mid-June to September, is the season to plan around in the north, where the Kosi, Gandak, Bagmati and Kamla rise and roads around Darbhanga, Purnia and Muzaffarpur can flood for days or weeks. December and January bring cold waves and thick fog. Chhath, six days after Diwali, fills the roads and ghats across the state. Late October to November after Chhath, and February and March, are the easiest months.

We are moving to Darbhanga in August. Will the floods get in the way?
They might. Darbhanga has good roads in, but the approach can be cut or diverted when the Bagmati and Kamla are high, and parts of the town waterlog after heavy rain. We watch the flood reports before the day, keep the date flexible by a day or two, and pack with an extra waterproof layer. If the date is yours to choose, move before the rains or after September.
Which bridge will the truck use between Patna and Muzaffarpur?
Mostly Mahatma Gandhi Setu to Hajipur and then the highway north, around 80 km in all. JP Setu, from Digha to Sonpur, is the other choice when the Gandhi Setu is backed up. Both are heaviest in the morning and evening, and Patna keeps heavy vehicles off its city roads through most of the daytime, which pushes the loading to early morning or evening.
We are coming back to Gaya after 20 years in Delhi. How is a move that size handled?
As two days at the Delhi end, one to pack a home that has filled up over 20 years and one to load. Everything goes on the inventory, heavy pieces are taken apart and fragile items get extra padding for the long road. Delhi to Gaya is roughly 1,000 km, so the goods reach Gaya a few days later, and the car, if you have one, travels on its own carrier. Tell us about the lanes and stairs at the Gaya house so the unloading is planned properly.
I have been transferred from Purnia to Patna. Can the quarters be handed back on the same day?
Yes, if the household is packed the day before. We pack on day one, load early on day two and leave the quarters empty for handover, then drive the roughly 300 km to Patna for unloading that evening or the next morning. Your department's format for the inventory and GST invoice can be followed, which keeps the transfer claim tidy.
