Shifting homes across Punjab
Punjab divides into three old regions, and people still use the names. Majha, north of the Beas, has Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Pathankot, near the Pakistan border and the Himachal hills. Doaba, between the Beas and the Sutlej, holds Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur, the NRI belt, where many families have members in Canada and Britain. Malwa, south of the Sutlej, is the largest, with Ludhiana, Patiala and Bathinda, and Mohali sits at its eastern edge beside Chandigarh. The state is compact and level, so a move between any two of its cities rarely takes more than a day on the road.
Moves here differ more by house than by region. Mohali, Kharar and Zirakpur have towers and gated societies with lift bookings and gate passes, most of them built in the last two decades. Elsewhere the Punjabi kothi is the usual home: a large two or three storey independent house on a plot, with heavy furniture, big wardrobes and a family that has lived there for years. In Doaba some of these houses stand locked for long periods while their owners live abroad. The walled city of Amritsar and Ludhiana's old bazaars have lanes no truck enters.
Industry and the forces account for much of the movement. Ludhiana makes cycles, hosiery and machine parts, Jalandhar sports goods and hand tools, Mohali has its IT City and research institutes, and Bathinda a refinery and an AIIMS. Kapurthala's Rail Coach Factory has its own township, and there are big cantonments at Jalandhar, Amritsar, Pathankot, Bathinda and Ferozepur. Homes and buildings
Independent houses dominate. The kothis of Jalandhar's Model Town, Ludhiana's Sarabha Nagar and Amritsar's Ranjit Avenue are big, with marble floors, wide staircases and heavy furniture, and Doaba's villages have their own large houses built with money sent from abroad. Urban estates laid out by PUDA and GMADA have plotted houses on wide roads. High-rise living is concentrated around Mohali, Kharar, Zirakpur and New Chandigarh, with a few towers in Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Army quarters, the Rail Coach Factory township at Kapurthala and the refinery colony near Bathinda have their own rules.

Between cities
NH 44, the GT Road, carries most of the state's traffic, from Rajpura past Khanna, Ludhiana, Phagwara and Jalandhar, and then turns north through Dasuya and Mukerian to Pathankot and on to Jammu. Amritsar is about 80 km west of Jalandhar on its own highway. From Mohali and Zirakpur, roads run to Patiala and Ludhiana, and Bathinda, in the south-west, is reached across Malwa through Barnala. It is level country with good roads. What slows a truck are the towns themselves, tractor trolleys at harvest time and fog in winter.

Moving into or out of Punjab
Punjab has a quirk for car owners in the tricity. Chandigarh is a union territory and Panchkula is in Haryana, so a car shifted from either to a home in Mohali or Zirakpur has moved state on paper, and after 12 months it should be registered in Punjab, starting with an NOC from its old registering authority. The same applies to any car arriving from further away. The household goods are simpler: used personal belongings are not being sold, so an itemised list and your declaration go with the load in place of an e-way bill. BH series plates are there for those who qualify, including the forces and government staff.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summers are hard and winters cold. May and June run to 45°C in Bathinda and Ludhiana, with dust and hot winds, and loading is done early. Rain from July to September is usually moderate, yet in some recent years the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi and Ghaggar have flooded villages and roads. After the paddy harvest in October and November, smoke from burning stubble hangs over the plains. December and January bring dense fog and frost, which slow trucks on NH 44 at night. February and March are the gentlest months, with late October and November next.

Our house is inside Amritsar's walled city. How do the goods come out?
Vehicle movement inside the walled city is restricted, and the heritage street leading to the Golden Temple is closed to traffic, so a small vehicle or handcart carries the load out to a road beyond the old gates where the truck can wait. Houses there are often tall and narrow with steep stairs, so furniture is taken apart upstairs. Avoid Gurpurabs, Baisakhi and Diwali, when the crowds around Harmandir Sahib are biggest.
We are moving from a Chandigarh sector house to Mohali. Is that a local move?
Yes. Most moves across the tricity are 10 to 20 km and fit in one day, and our Zirakpur office handles them. The work is usually the carry, since many sector houses have stairs and no lift, and at the Mohali end a society may ask ahead of time for the crew's names and the registration of the truck. If your car has a Chandigarh number, remember that Mohali counts as Punjab for registration.
I am posted to Pathankot. What should I arrange for the cantonment?
Three dates and a contact: when the old quarters must be vacated, when the new ones are allotted, when you report, and someone at the unit who can clear our truck through the gate. Pathankot is also the road into Jammu and Himachal, so if your next posting goes further on, the onward leg can be planned at the same time. How long does a move from Jalandhar to Delhi NCR take?
Jalandhar to Gurugram or Noida is roughly 370 to 400 km on NH 44, a long day's drive. Packing and loading take the first day and the unloading happens on the second, allowing for Delhi's daytime limits on goods vehicles.
