Shifting homes in Dehradun
Dehradun still keeps much of the bungalow town it once was. Dalanwala, Karanpur, Vasant Vihar and the lanes off Rajpur Road have single and double storey houses on big plots, often with a litchi or mango tree in the compound and a verandah of cane chairs. Since the city became the state capital, apartment blocks have gone up along Sahastradhara Road, GMS Road, the Shimla Bypass and the Haridwar road, and newer houses have filled the land towards Premnagar and Doiwala. Above Rajpur the road starts to climb, and homes there sit on terraces cut into the hill.
Those three kinds of home make three different moves. An old Dalanwala bungalow holds decades of teak and sheesham furniture, trunks of woollens and shelves of books, and packing it is most of the work, often spread over two days. A flat in a newer tower is quick once the lift is booked. A house on the slope above Rajpur or near Malsi is decided by the road: the truck stops where the gradient allows, a pickup climbs the rest, and heavy pieces may come down steps from the gate.
Government is a large employer, with the Secretariat, the Vidhan Sabha and every state department based here. ONGC, whose big colony spreads across Kaulagarh, the Survey of India, the Forest Research Institute, the Wildlife Institute and the Indian Institute of Petroleum bring scientists and officers on transfer. The Indian Military Academy, RIMC and the cantonments at Clement Town and Garhi add defence families, and the boarding schools bring parents who rent near the campus for a few years. Retired officers settle here, and graduates leave for Delhi NCR and the southern tech cities.

Packers and movers charges in Dehradun
Dehradun is longer than it is wide. Clement Town to Rajpur is about 14 km through the centre, and Premnagar to Sahastradhara Road nearer 18 km, so a drive across the city takes an hour at most and a 2 BHK fits inside a day. Time goes at the Clock Tower, Prince Chowk and the ISBT crossing, on narrow roads in the older colonies where two vehicles cannot pass, and on hill addresses where the load changes from truck to pickup. A large bungalow in Dalanwala is usually packed on one day and moved on the next.

Dalanwala and Karanpur
Old bungalows and walled compounds on quiet roads east of Rajpur Road. The truck reaches most gates easily, and the hours go on packing a house lived in for decades.
Rajpur Road, Jakhan and Malsi
The road north towards Mussoorie. Flats and shops lower down, then houses on the slope where lanes turn steep and narrow and a pickup takes over from the truck.
Vasant Vihar, Indira Nagar and the FRI side
Planned colonies of independent houses near the Forest Research Institute and the ONGC colony. The roads there are generous, and even the larger truck pulls up beside most gates.
Sahastradhara Road and the IT Park
Newer apartment towers with service lifts and a society office. The road clogs in the evening, so loading is planned for the morning.
Clement Town and Turner Road
Cantonment housing, the Mindrolling monastery quarter and colonies south of the ISBT. Army areas need the truck and crew cleared at the gate before the day.
Paltan Bazaar and the Clock Tower
The old market around Ghanta Ghar, packed with shoppers and autos from mid morning. Flats above shops are loaded at first light, and goods go out by pickup.

Society and building rules
In a city of independent houses, the date is agreed with the landlord, and the electricity and water bills are usually squared with them before the deposit comes back. The newer towers on Sahastradhara Road, GMS Road and the Shimla Bypass have associations that want notice, clear dues and a daytime slot for the service lift, and tenants are sometimes asked to show a consent letter from the flat's owner. Government housing at Yamuna Colony, the ONGC colony and cantonment quarters are vacated through their own estate offices, with an inspection that fixes the loading date.

Where the truck can stand
The valley colonies are easy. Vasant Vihar, Indira Nagar, Clement Town and the newer areas on the Haridwar and Sahastradhara roads let a 17 ft truck stand right outside the house. The older lanes of Karanpur, Dalanwala and Khurbura are narrower, with cars parked along the walls and sharp corners, and a 14 ft truck is the limit there. On the Mussoorie road above Rajpur the gradient and hairpins rule out a loaded truck altogether, so it waits on level ground below and a pickup makes the climbing trips, with a carry down steps for houses below the road.

Traffic and timing
The worst traffic sits at the Clock Tower, Prince Chowk, Dilaram Chowk and the ISBT and Rispana bridge crossings, from about 9 am and again in the evening. Large goods vehicles face daytime limits on the busiest city roads, which pushes a big truck to the early morning or the late evening. On long weekends and through May and June, cars heading up to Mussoorie choke Rajpur Road. The Jhanda Mela at Darbar Sahib, held soon after Holi, fills Jhanda Bazaar and the streets around Paltan Bazaar for days, and a move near there waits until it is over.

Weather and the months to plan around
Dehradun gets far more rain than the plains below it. The monsoon arrives in late June and the heaviest weeks are July and August, when the Rispana and Bindal run high, low roads flood after a downpour and the Mussoorie road can close for a landslide. We pack wood and upholstery with a plastic layer and keep each loading spell short between showers. May and June afternoons climb near 38°C. Winter nights drop to a few degrees, with fog over the valley on some mornings. The gentlest stretches are October into November, and February into March.

Can you move a house on the Mussoorie road above Rajpur?
Yes, with a different plan from a valley house. The main truck stays on level ground below, a pickup shuttles up and down the slope, and the crew hand-carries the last part from wherever it can pull in. At the survey we look at the gradient, the last bend and any steps down from the road, and the extra vehicle and the carry are written into the quote as separate lines.
I am posted out of the IMA or the Clement Town cantonment. What do you need from me?
Names of everyone on the crew and the truck's registration, early enough for the gate pass to be issued, and the two dates that matter most, the quarters handback and your reporting day. We finish packing before the inspection and hand over an item-wise list and a GST invoice to go with your claim. A car or motorcycle is booked onto a carrier and turns up on a date of its own.
Should we avoid moving in July or August in Dehradun?
July and August are the hardest months. Showers come with little warning, low roads near the Rispana flood, and the hill roads can shut for a few hours after a slip. The move still goes ahead: cartons and furniture get a waterproof layer, tarpaulin covers the path to the truck, and a hill address gets a wider window. If you can pick, October is far easier.
Can you shift us from Dehradun to Delhi NCR in a day?
Delhi is about 250 km away, so the packing and loading happen here during the day and the truck reaches Delhi by evening. Goods vehicles face long daytime restrictions inside Delhi, so unloading there usually happens at night or early next morning, and a gated society in Gurgaon or Noida may give a morning slot.
