Model Town to Sector 25 is about 6 km, and the refinery township, further out, is still well under an hour from anywhere in the city, so a 2 BHK leaves one house and is set up in the next before dark. Traffic moves quickly on the elevated highway and slowly on the service lanes beneath it. The time goes in the bazaar lanes, where every piece is carried to a pickup, and in big family houses with a store room of bedding and old stock. Panipat has few big housing societies, so a household move rarely needs a gate pass. In the HUDA sectors the owner usually lives downstairs and will want the last rent paid, the power bill cleared and any damage talked over before the deposit comes back. The refinery and NFL townships are stricter: the estate office inspects the quarters, meters are read, and security needs the truck and every crew member on its list. Textile units keep their own gate and stock register, and commercial goods travel with an invoice or delivery challan of their own.

Where the truck can stand
Model Town and the HUDA sectors are easy, with space outside nearly every house for even a 17 ft truck. The old city is another matter: Insar Bazar and the lanes around it are narrow, crowded with handcarts and bales, and blocked by loading tempos from mid morning, so a pickup works the lanes. Through the city, GT Road runs beneath the elevated highway, with service lanes where a truck can stop briefly but not wait. Industrial roads are wide and used to heavy traffic, which helps with a godown.

Traffic and timing
Panipat's traffic piles up on the service lanes under the elevated highway, near the bus stand and the railway station, and around the textile markets from late morning. Blanket orders build through the late monsoon and autumn, and the bazaar lanes are at their fullest then. A move in the old city is best started at dawn. Diwali, and the winter weddings after it, clog the evenings. A household move goes smoothest on a weekday morning.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer on this stretch of the plains is dry and fierce, passing 44°C on most May and June afternoons, so we load in the first hours of daylight. Rain from July to September is moderate here, though one heavy spell can put low roads and underpasses under water for a few hours. From mid December fog settles on NH 44 at night and in the early morning, which slows a truck heading for Delhi or Chandigarh. The gentlest weather for a move comes in October and November, and again in February and March.

Yes. Bales, finished stock, racks and light machinery are looked at on the same survey and priced as their own load, with an invoice or challan of their own so the goods and the paperwork match. We live in the refinery township. How does a transfer move work?

We begin at first light, get the almirahs and beds out while the lane is still empty, and let a pickup ferry the rest to the truck on the GT Road service lane. When would a load from Panipat reach Delhi?
The drive is about 95 km down NH 44, and a home packed before lunch is on the highway by early afternoon. Delhi, though, keeps a full-size truck out until late in the evening, so it rolls in and unloads after dark, or first thing the following day. A Gurgaon or Noida address can be reached on the peripheral expressways without that wait.
