Roorkee grew around the Upper Ganga Canal and the engineering college built to serve it, which is now IIT Roorkee. The campus works like a small township, with faculty bungalows, staff quarters and hostels. Next to it lies the cantonment of the Bengal Engineer Group, the Bengal Sappers, with its own roads and quarters. Civil Lines has old bungalows with deep verandahs, and the main bazaar is a crowded knot of shops and narrow lanes. Newer colonies of houses, with apartment blocks appearing among them, have spread along the Haridwar and Delhi roads.
Much of Roorkee's moving follows two calendars. The academic year brings faculty, researchers and students in July and sends many out in May and June, and army postings in the cantonment come with a fixed reporting date. Both mean a move is planned around an inspection and a handover, and quarters on campus or in the cantonment are often older buildings with stairs and no lift. Colony homes are easier: a gate, one staircase, and a truck parked on flat ground.
Besides IIT, the town has the Central Building Research Institute and the National Institute of Hydrology, which bring scientists on transfer, along with private engineering colleges and schools. The Bhagwanpur industrial area towards Saharanpur and the SIDCUL estate at Haridwar employ plant staff who live in Roorkee's colonies. Graduates leave for Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Hyderabad, and families move up the road to Dehradun or Haridwar.

Roorkee is small and flat. The IIT campus to Civil Lines is 2 or 3 km, and the cantonment to the Haridwar Road colonies under 8 km, so a 2 BHK is loaded in the morning and set up in the afternoon. The slow points are the railway crossing, the bazaar and the canal bridges, and the highway through town when it is full of trucks. What takes longest is the stair carry from an older campus or cantonment block.

The cantonment

Society and building rules
Campus and cantonment housing set the rules for many Roorkee moves. The institute's estate section wants the quarters emptied and inspected before the keys go back, and a clearance may be needed from the department, so we load on the eve of the inspection. Army quarters follow a similar drill with the station authorities. In the colonies the landlord is usually upstairs or next door, and settling the rent and the electricity reading keeps the day simple. The few apartment societies ask for notice and dues cleared.

Where the truck can stand
Roorkee's roads are mostly kind to a truck. The campus, the cantonment and Civil Lines have wide roads once the gate lets the vehicle in, and the colonies on the Haridwar and Delhi roads have room at the gate. The tight spots are the bazaar lanes and some older mohallas, where a pickup does the shuttling, and the highway frontage, where standing on the carriageway is unsafe and a side road is used instead. Traffic and timing
The highway from Delhi to Haridwar runs through Roorkee, and the Kanwar Yatra in Shravan fills it with pilgrims walking to and from Haridwar for about two weeks. In those days heavy vehicles are stopped and diverted, parts of the town are closed off, and a long-distance load waits. Otherwise the traffic is worst on the highway junctions and in the bazaar from late morning. Term ends in May and the start of the session in July are the busy weeks for bookings, so fix those dates early.

Weather and the months to plan around
Roorkee has plains weather. May and June are hot and dry, with afternoons above 40°C, so the loading starts early. The monsoon from July to September is humid and heavy, the Solani rises, and a hard shower puts water on low roads for a few hours. December and January are cold, with dense fog that can last into late morning and slows every truck on the highway. For a gentler move, pick February, March, October or November.

Yes. Once the inspection date is known, packing and loading happen the previous day and the quarters are left empty. A home with a big collection of books and files takes longer than the rooms suggest, so the survey takes stock of every bookshelf. If the institute pays, the inventory and GST invoice carry its name.
Will the Kanwar Yatra affect a move out of Roorkee?
Yes, for about two weeks in Shravan, usually in July or August. The highway through Roorkee is given over to pilgrims, heavy vehicles are held back and some roads in town are closed. A local move in the colonies may still work early in the day, but a long load should leave before the yatra begins or after it ends.
I am being posted out of the Bengal Sappers. What do you need?
For the gate pass, a list of the crew and the truck's registration, then your quarters handover date and your reporting date. Packing is done before the handover inspection. Your claim is supported by an inventory and a GST bill, and a car or motorcycle can travel on a carrier to the new station.

Yes. A mattress, a study table, books and a cycle add up to a light load. If the destination is far, ask whether a truck already booked in that direction has room, which costs less, takes longer and is never certain. The last weeks of the semester are busy, so book early.
