Shifting homes in Rohtak
Rohtak is Haryana's medical and education town. PGIMS, the state's main government medical institute and hospital, and Maharshi Dayanand University are both here, and IIM Rohtak has its campus on the edge of town. Doctors, residents, nurses, professors and students make up a large and shifting part of the population, and their moves come in waves at the start of the academic year and when residencies begin and end.
Industry arrived more recently. The IMT Rohtak estate has Maruti Suzuki's research and development centre and a growing list of suppliers, and it brings engineers from across the country on company transfers. The older economy is trade, with the grain market, the cloth shops and the bazaars of the old city, and farming families in the villages around who send their children to study and settle in town.
Housing is mostly independent. Model Town and the HUDA sectors, among them Sectors 1 and 14, have houses on plots with a staircase and a roof, often with two families under one roof. The old city is dense, with narrow lanes, shops at street level and homes above. Group housing towers and plotted townships have come up along the bypasses and towards Delhi, and the hospital and university have their own quarters and hostels.

The bypasses and the roads around the bus stand slow a loaded truck at busy hours, and the lanes of the old city add carrying time. An older, well-kept address with big houses and a market. Wide enough for a 17 ft truck, though cars outside the market narrow the road by evening.
Sectors 1 and 14
HUDA sectors with plotted houses near the Delhi road. Parking is easy, and the work is the staircase to the upper floor or the roof.
PGIMS and MDU campuses
Doctors' and faculty quarters and hostels. Security clears the vehicle, the estate office sets the handover, and hospital traffic slows the approach during OPD hours.

The old city

Society and building rules
In an independent house the date needs a nod from the landlord, who often lives on the ground floor, and the meter readings and final rent are settled before loading. Group housing societies near the bypass want notice to the maintenance office and dues cleared, with a daytime slot for the lift. PGIMS, MDU and government quarters are vacated through the estate office, which inspects the house and checks the fittings, and the loading date is set from the inspection.

Where the truck can stand
Model Town, the HUDA sectors and the IMT area take a full-size truck easily. Around the hospital, the approach roads are crowded with patients' vehicles and ambulances from morning to afternoon, so we reach campus quarters early. The old city's bazaar lanes will not take a truck, and parked two-wheelers block what room there is, so a pickup brings the goods out. On the Delhi road the truck loads from a side road, never the highway itself.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Rohtak is heaviest near the bus stand, around the PGIMS gates and on the Delhi road at office hours. The residency and admission season in summer and the MDU exam weeks add to it. Weddings from November to February crowd the roads on auspicious dates. A load for Delhi or Gurgaon leaves after the morning rush, and in summer the loading is done before 11 am. The quietest time for a move is a weekday morning.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summers are severe. May and June go past 44°C with dust hanging in the air, so work begins at first light. The monsoon arrives in July and is patchy, but a heavy downpour floods low roads and some underpasses for hours. Winter is cold, and in December and January dense fog on NH 9 and the roads to Delhi slows a truck in the early morning. February to March and October to November are the easy months.
