Shifting homes in Gwalior
Gwalior grew in pieces around its fort. Lashkar, the Scindias' city to the south, has the Maharaj Bada, the Sarafa and the market streets, with old houses of two and three storeys pressed together above shops. Old Gwalior, on the north side of the fort around Hazira, is smaller and just as crowded. Morar, to the east, began as a cantonment and still holds army lines and bungalows. The planned areas, City Centre, Thatipur, DD Nagar and the colonies on Jhansi Road, have independent houses, housing board blocks and a growing number of apartment towers.
Moving in Lashkar calls for a small vehicle and an early start, because the bazaars fill by mid morning and the stairs inside the old houses are steep. The planned colonies are easy by comparison, with parking outside and one staircase to deal with. Gwalior homes hold heavy furniture and a lot of it, and families in the older parts of town often have a store room or a whole upper floor of trunks, brass and steel to clear. The survey is where all of that gets counted.
The army at Morar, the air force station at Maharajpura and the BSF academy at Tekanpur bring service families in and out. The High Court bench, the divisional offices and Jiwaji University bring officials, lawyers and teachers. Students come for IIITM, LNIPE, the Gajra Raja Medical College and the private universities, and for the Scindia School on the fort. The factories at Malanpur and Banmore employ engineers. Many of Gwalior's graduates end up in Delhi NCR, a few hours up the highway.

Lashkar and Maharaj Bada
The old market city around the Maharaj Bada, Sarafa and Daulatganj. No truck can stop in the bazaar once shops open, so a pickup loads at dawn.
Morar

Thatipur and DD Nagar
Big government and housing board colonies with flats up shared stairs. The roads take a full truck, and the carry down the stairs is most of the work.
City Centre and Mahalgaon
The planned administrative area, with offices, hospitals and apartment blocks. Easy roads, though parking outside the offices fills up by late morning.
Hazira and Old Gwalior
The town on the fort's north side, near Tansen's tomb, with narrow lanes and old houses. Moves here take a small vehicle and plenty of carrying.
Jhansi Road and Shivpuri Link Road
Newer colonies and apartment towers on the southern edge, with wide roads, lifts in the taller buildings and quick access to the highways.

Society and building rules
Most Gwalior homes are independent houses or small blocks, where the date, the final bills and the meter readings are settled with the landlord. Housing board colonies in DD Nagar and Thatipur have no society office to speak of, but neighbours share the staircase, and a word in advance helps. The newer towers on the southern side have associations that ask for notice and cleared dues, and some want a written go-ahead from the owner. Army quarters in Morar, air force housing at Maharajpura and BSF quarters at Tekanpur each have a vacating inspection that sets the loading date.

Where the truck can stand
City Centre, Thatipur, DD Nagar and the southern colonies take a 17 ft truck without much trouble. The Lashkar bazaars do not. Around Maharaj Bada, the Sarafa and Naya Bazaar the lanes are narrow and a single vehicle blocks them, so the truck is left wherever Lashkar's roads first widen, and a pickup ferries everything to it. Old Gwalior near Hazira is much the same. Inside the Morar cantonment the truck parks where the gate staff say, and the crew carries from there to the quarter.

Traffic and timing
The Gwalior trade fair runs for several weeks each winter at the mela ground, pulling in shoppers from all over Chambal, and nearby roads stay slow while it lasts. The Tansen Samaroh brings music lovers to Hazira in December. Traffic backs up daily around Maharaj Bada, Phool Bagh and the railway station. Fog in December and January slows trucks on the highways in the early hours, so a load leaving for Delhi or Agra sets off once the morning clears. In the city, weekday mornings are easiest.

Weather and the months to plan around
Gwalior has one of the harshest climates in central India. May and June afternoons pass 45°C with a hot loo wind, so electronics, polished wood and anything with plastic parts stay out of the sun until the truck is ready. The monsoon from July to September is moderate. Winter is cold, with January nights near 3°C and thick morning fog. For an easy move, pick late October, November, February or March.

Can you move a house in the Lashkar bazaar near Maharaj Bada?
Yes. First we look at the lane, on video or in person. The truck is parked on the closest road wide enough for it, and at daybreak a pickup starts running between that road and your door. Heavy furniture comes apart upstairs before the carry down. Having the loading done before the Lashkar shutters go up saves an hour or more.
