Shifting homes in Bhopal
Bhopal is several towns joined around its lakes. The old city on the eastern side of the Upper Lake was the Nawabs' capital, and its mohallas around Chowk Bazaar, Ibrahimpura and Budhwara are still packed with old courtyard houses and shops. When Bhopal became the capital of Madhya Pradesh in 1956, a planned city of government quarters went up in TT Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Tulsi Nagar and Char Imli, with Arera Colony and Shahpura around them. BHEL built its own township further east, and the newest towers stand along Kolar Road, Hoshangabad Road and the Ayodhya Bypass.
The hills matter as much as the housing. Shyamla Hills, Idgah Hills and the slopes of Arera and Katara Hills have houses reached by steep, winding roads, where a long truck struggles to turn and the crew may carry uphill to the gate. The government blocks of the new city are two to four storeys with a shared staircase and no lift, and they go back to the estate office on a fixed date. The gated towers on Kolar Road and Hoshangabad Road are the simplest: a lift, a guard at the gate and room to park.
Government sets the pace of moving in Bhopal. Transfers in and out of Vallabh Bhawan, the directorates and the state corporations run all year, with a rush after each round of transfer orders. BHEL and the factories at Mandideep bring engineers and plant staff, and AIIMS, MANIT, IISER, the National Law Institute University and Barkatullah University bring doctors, faculty and students. The army has a corps headquarters in the city and the EME Centre at Bairagarh. Young people leave for private jobs in Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Bhopal spreads a long way around its lakes. Bairagarh to Misrod is about 25 km, the old city to a Kolar Road township about 12 km, and BHEL to Arera Colony nearer 10 km. Townships on Kolar Road and Hoshangabad Road want notice through the management office, a slot on the service lift and a clean maintenance account before they let furniture past the gate. Tenants are usually asked for a letter or message from the owner. Government quarters follow a separate process: the flat is inspected, fittings are checked against the allotment record and the keys go back to the estate office, so the packing is done the day before. BHEL quarters are handed back through the township's own office, with its dues settled first.

Where the truck can stand
Arera Colony, Shahpura, the BHEL sectors and the new townships all let a 17 ft truck up to the gate. The old city is the exception. Around Chowk Bazaar, Ibrahimpura and Peer Gate the truck stops on Hamidia Road or another main road, leaving a pickup to make the trips into the lanes. On Idgah Hills and Shyamla Hills the roads are steep with tight bends, and a shorter truck is safer on the slope. Government colonies have wide roads, but cars line both sides overnight, and a morning start finds the most room.

Traffic and timing
Office traffic peaks around Board Office Square, Roshanpura, MP Nagar and Lalghati in the late morning and again after 5 pm, when the secretariat and the offices empty. Bhopal bars big goods trucks from its main roads through most daylight hours, which is why an intercity load gets packed by day and pulls out after dark. The Aalami Tablighi Ijtema, held each winter on the northern outskirts, draws very large crowds and brings diversions on the roads out that way for several days. Durga Puja and Muharram processions close parts of the old city in their turn.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer runs from March to mid June, and May afternoons reach 42°C or more. The monsoon is generous from late June to September, and a heavy spell fills the underpasses and leaves water standing on low stretches around town. Wood and upholstery pick up damp in those weeks, so the packing gets a plastic layer. Winters are cool and dry, with January nights close to 5°C, and the months from October to February suit a move best.

Usually, yes. Indore is about 190 km by road. A household loaded in Bhopal after breakfast reaches Indore that evening, with unloading that night, or at daybreak where the Indore society forbids late moves. Many Indore townships fix a slot and book the service lift, so send those rules at booking. A car or motorcycle goes on its own carrier.
