Madhya Pradesh is large and spread out, and its cities sit in regions with a character of their own. Malwa in the west holds Indore, Ujjain, Dewas and Ratlam on a black-soil plateau. Bhopal, the capital, sits in the centre among its lakes. Gwalior and the Chambal country lie in the north, Sagar in Bundelkhand, Jabalpur in the Mahakoshal region on the Narmada, and Rewa and Satna in the Vindhya east, where cement plants dot the country around Satna.
Indore is the state's commercial city, with IT campuses, the Pithampur auto cluster, coaching institutes, IIM and IIT. Bhopal runs on government: the secretariat, departments and boards fill whole colonies, and BHEL, AIIMS and the national institutes add more. Jabalpur has the High Court, the ordnance factories, a big army presence and the zonal railway headquarters. Gwalior has the Air Force station at Maharajpur and the BSF academy at Tekanpur, Sagar and Mhow are cantonment towns, and Ratlam is a railway division town.
Transfers drive much of the movement: state government officers between district headquarters, defence families between cantonments, and railway staff, bank officers and teachers. Students move to Indore and Bhopal for coaching and college, and young graduates leave for Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Ujjain keeps its own rhythm, with pilgrims all year and the Simhastha fair every 12 years, when the city fills and traffic rules change for weeks.

Homes and buildings
Across Madhya Pradesh, the usual home is an independent house on a plot in a planned colony, and apartment towers are now common in Indore and Bhopal. Bhopal has whole areas of government housing, from the old quarters of T T Nagar and the Char Imli bungalows to newer blocks, and BHEL's township around Piplani. Jabalpur, Sagar and Mhow have cantonment bungalows, and Jabalpur's ordnance estates at Khamaria and the Vehicle Factory have their own quarters. The old cores of Bhopal around Chowk, Gwalior's Lashkar and Ujjain's temple area have lanes too narrow for a truck.

Between cities
The old Agra-Bombay road runs through the west of the state from Gwalior and Shivpuri to Dewas and Indore, and NH 44, the north-south highway, runs from Gwalior through Jhansi and Sagar towards Seoni and Nagpur. The Bhopal-Indore road through Sehore and Dewas is the busiest link between the two big cities. Jabalpur connects to Bhopal through Narsinghpur along the Narmada valley. The Vindhya and Satpura ranges bring ghat sections, such as the one near Budni, and the Chambal ravines around Morena line the approach to Gwalior. Many links between district towns are long two-lane roads.

Moving into or out of Madhya Pradesh
Moving into or out of Madhya Pradesh, household goods need no permit. A load of your own used furniture and belongings counts as personal effects, so it travels with an inventory and your signed declaration, which keeps it outside the e-way bill system in most cases. A car that will stay for more than a year should be registered in the state against the old RTO's NOC, and the BH series is available to eligible central, state, defence and private sector staff. Deliveries into cantonments and ordnance estates need a pass with the crew's names and the vehicle number, which the family arranges.

Weather and the months to plan around
May and early June are very hot, with Gwalior and the Chambal belt reaching 45 to 47°C, Sagar close behind and Indore a little cooler. The monsoon runs from late June to September and is heaviest in the east around Jabalpur and Mandla, where the Narmada and its tributaries rise and low causeways go under. Winters are cold in the north, with fog around Gwalior in December and January that slows early morning driving. Diwali and the wedding season crowd the calendar in November. October to February is the best time to move.

I am being transferred to Bhopal and allotted a government quarter. What do I need?
The allotment order, and a handover of keys at the estate office that manages the quarter, where any fittings and meter readings are noted. Government colonies such as T T Nagar and Char Imli have wide roads, so the truck usually reaches the door. If your department reimburses the move, ask what form of quote and bill it needs before booking.
Can monsoon floods hold up a move around Jabalpur?
Sometimes. In a heavy spell the Narmada and the streams feeding it rise, and low causeways on smaller roads go under, so a route can change at short notice. The main highways usually stay open. For a move in July or August, keep a day in hand, and expect wood and upholstery to be wrapped against the damp.
Can you move us out of a cantonment in Mhow or Sagar?
Yes. The station headquarters or the unit usually wants the crew's names, identity details and the truck number before the vehicle is allowed in, and entry is in set hours. Get the pass in hand a day or two ahead. Cantonment bungalows have space for a truck at the door, so the loading itself is quick.
Is fog a problem for moves around Gwalior in winter?
In December and January dense fog can cut visibility close to zero in the early morning, especially on the roads towards Morena and Agra. Trucks wait for it to lift, so the start may be pushed to mid-morning, while packing goes ahead as planned. Long moves out of Gwalior in those weeks need a little more time in the plan.
