Bharatpur grew around Lohagarh, the fort with earthen ramparts and a moat in the middle of town. The walled town around it has gates such as Mathura Gate, Kumher Gate and Atal Bandh, and inside them the lanes are narrow and the houses old, close-packed and often two or three storeys with steep stairs. Outside the walls the town opened up: Ranjeet Nagar and other colonies of independent houses, the railway area near the junction, and newer building along the Agra and Jaipur roads.

Traffic peaks around the bus stand, the junction and the Agra road in the morning and evening, and the markets in the walled town are busy from late morning. Heavy vehicles face limits in town for most of the daytime, which is why a large truck starts work early. Holi in Braj runs for days around Mathura and Barsana, and moves across the border then are best avoided. Winter weekends fill the Agra road with visitors to Keoladeo.

Weather and the months to plan around
May and June are very hot, often above 45°C, with dust in the air, and loading starts at dawn. The monsoon, July to September, brings heavy spells that fill low streets for hours, so packing gets a plastic layer. From late December into January dense fog settles over the area and can last until late morning, slowing an early start and any load heading to Delhi. The kindest months for a move are October, November and late February into March.
