Shifting homes in Kanpur
Kanpur grew around its mills and its cantonment, and the housing still shows it. Civil Lines, the Mall Road area and the Cantonment have large old bungalows and officers' quarters. Swaroop Nagar, Tilak Nagar and Arya Nagar are older family houses of two and three floors. South of the railway line, Kidwai Nagar, Govind Nagar, Barra and Yashoda Nagar are KDA colonies, and newer apartment blocks now stand in the north-west, towards the IIT.
A Kanpur house is usually full. Families stay put for decades, and a move means sheesham and teak furniture, steel almirahs, a cooler and an inverter for every summer and a loft of things no one has opened in years. We see it on video or in person before quoting, because the load decides the truck and the crew. In the old city around Generalganj, Collectorganj and Nayaganj, the lanes matter more than the load.
Work here is industrial and institutional. The ordnance factories, the HAL division and the Air Force station at Chakeri, the leather units at Jajmau and the Panki and Dada Nagar industrial areas bring transfers in and out. Society and building rules
Kanpur has few large gated societies, and a move here involves less paperwork than in the NCR. Apartment blocks in Swaroop Nagar and the newer projects ask for a note to the secretary, and a few set hours for shifting. Ordnance, HAL and other government quarters have their own vacating procedure and a handover date, which we work to. In the KDA colonies, tell the neighbours before a truck blocks their road for the morning.

Where the truck can stand
Outside the old city, Kanpur's roads take a truck, though parked cars and roadside stalls narrow them by midday. In Kidwai Nagar and Govind Nagar a 14 ft truck gets closer than a 17 ft one. The old markets are another matter. Generalganj, Nayaganj, Collectorganj and the lanes around Moolganj are full of handcarts and loading tempos all day, and the only workable plan is a small vehicle at dawn, shuttling to a truck parked on the main road.

Traffic and timing
Rawatpur, Bada Chauraha, Fazalganj, Jhakarkati and the Ghantaghar near Kanpur Central are the knots, with office traffic from 9 am and again between 5 and 8 pm. Heavy vehicles are held out of the city for much of the day, so we pack in the morning and load in the early afternoon, and a truck for another city leaves at night. Diwali and Dussehra weeks crowd every market road, so book those dates early.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kanpur summers are harsh, with May and June regularly above 45°C and a hot wind through the afternoon, so we start early and load electronics last. Late June to September is sticky, and the older neighbourhoods waterlog after heavy showers. Fog settles in through December and January, and mornings stay grey until 10 am. Plan for October, November or February if the date is yours to choose.

Can you move a coaching student's room out of Kakadeo?
Yes. One room's worth of things, usually a bed, books, a cooler and a few bags, fits in a small vehicle, which is also the right size for Kakadeo's lanes. If you are heading home to another town, we can look for other goods going the same way to share the truck, though that is never certain. Results season gets busy, so give us a few days' notice.
Do you handle transfers from the ordnance factories and HAL at Chakeri?
Yes. The inventory and the GST invoice are drawn up for your office's reimbursement, and loading is planned around the date the quarters go back. Colony gates usually need the vehicle number and crew names beforehand, and we send them once the date is fixed. If you own a car or bike, it goes separately on a carrier.
