In the city itself, Hirapur and Luby Circular Road are the older residential core, Saraidhela and Dhaiya have filled up with apartment blocks, and Bank More and Jharia are dense trading areas where shops and homes share the same buildings.
Colony quarters are mostly low blocks and single storey houses with a yard, easy to load, and they come with a handover to the area office. Flats in Saraidhela and Dhaiya have lifts in the newer buildings and stairs in the rest. The one constant is the fine black dust from the mines and the coal lorries, which settles on anything left uncovered. Each carton is sealed the moment it is full, and sofas and mattresses are covered in the room before they are carried out.
The coal economy brings the transfers: BCCL, the Directorate General of Mines Safety, CIMFR and the Dhanbad railway division, one of the railways' busiest freight divisions. IIT (ISM) brings students, faculty and researchers, the medical college hospital brings doctors, and the fertiliser plant and BIT at Sindri bring engineers. Many families have lived here for two or three generations, and their grown children leave for Bangalore, Delhi NCR and Kolkata, while officers move on to other coalfields.

An old town in the middle of the coalfield, with crowded bazaar lanes and coal lorries on every approach road. A smaller vehicle does the lanes, and the dust calls for extra covering.

Society and building rules
BCCL, Tata Steel and railway quarters each have an office that inspects them and issues a no-dues slip for electricity and water, and the loading is booked for the day before. IIT (ISM) has an estate section for faculty quarters, and hostel wardens set the vacating dates for students. Apartment associations in Saraidhela and Dhaiya want advance notice, a daytime slot and dues cleared, and tenants should have the owner's approval in writing. Older houses in Hirapur have none of this, just neighbours who will want the lane clear by evening.

Where the truck can stand
The colonies and Koyla Nagar are easy, with open roads and space outside the quarters. The city centre is not. Bank More, the lanes off Luby Circular Road and the Jharia bazaar are too crowded for a truck to stand once the shops open, so a pickup brings goods out to the main vehicle. Coal lorries own the roads to Jharia, Sindri and Katras at most hours, and a truck loading beside them needs one of the crew watching the traffic. Some older colony lanes are narrow even inside, and we check before choosing the vehicle.

Traffic and timing
Coal lorries run through Dhanbad at all hours, and goods trucks face time limits on the central roads. Bank More, Hirapur and the station area are worst from late morning to evening. Durga Puja is celebrated in a big way, with pandals across the city, Chhath fills the ponds for two days, and Ram Navami processions close central roads. For loading, an early weekday morning works best.

Weather and the months to plan around
Dhanbad's summer is harsh, with May afternoons often above 43°C and a hot wind that lifts the coal dust and carries it further. The crew loads in the early hours, keeps electronics out of the sun and wraps soft furnishings against the grime, and April and May evenings can bring thunderstorms. The monsoon, mid June to September, turns colony lanes muddy and briefly floods low roads. The air turns cool and dry from November to February, with haze on still mornings, and that is the easiest season to move.

How do you keep coal dust off our furniture during a move?
Everything is wrapped in the room it stands in. Cartons are taped shut as soon as they are full, sofas and mattresses go into plastic covers under the outer wrap, and the truck is kept closed between trips. If the house is near a colliery or the Jharia road, the loading is done quickly with doors shut. It uses a little more packing material and saves hours of cleaning later.
Can you work to the handover date of my BCCL quarter?
Yes. When the area office gives you a date, packing is done on the eve and the truck loads that morning, leaving the quarter empty and its fittings in place. The claim gets an itemised list of goods and a GST invoice in the company's name. If you are posted to another Coal India subsidiary, tell us the new address and your joining date together so the transit is planned from both.
Is a move from Dhanbad to Bokaro or Asansol done in one day?
Yes. Bokaro is about 40 km through Chas and Asansol about 60 km on the GT road, which means goods packed at breakfast reach the new home by mid afternoon. At the Bokaro end the address is often a BSL quarter or a Chas apartment, and each has its own rules, so send us the address early.
Can a truck reach an old house in Jharia?
Usually only part of the way. The bazaar lanes are narrow and busy, and coal lorries crowd the approach roads, so the main truck waits at a wider point and a pickup shuttles to the door. Starting at dawn helps. A short video of the lane, taken on your phone, tells us what we need, and the price you get in writing already counts the extra trips.
