Hazaribagh sits on a plateau at around 600 m, cooler and greener than the coal towns around it, and for a long time families from Bihar and Bengal built houses here for the climate. Many of those houses remain, single or two storey with verandas, a compound and old trees, in the colonies near the lake and on the roads around Canary Hill. Newer colonies spread along the Ranchi road and the Barhi road, with a few apartment blocks, and the old market around Jhanda Chowk is tightly built.
Moves here are mostly house moves, which means plenty of furniture and very little waiting for a lift. Old houses hold heavy wooden cupboards, trunks and a store room nobody has emptied in years, and the survey counts all of it. Upper floors are reached by an inside or outside staircase, and a narrow turn there decides whether a wardrobe is taken apart. In the market area around Jhanda Chowk, homes above shops open onto lanes where only a small vehicle fits.
Hazaribagh is a district and divisional headquarters, and much of its movement comes from postings: government staff, bank officers, teachers at Vinoba Bhave University and St Columba's College, and doctors at the medical college. The BSF training centre at Meru brings its own transfers. Coal and power projects in the district, including NTPC's mines at Pakri Barwadih, add engineers. Society and building rules
Societies are rare in Hazaribagh. In a rented house, the landlord wants the rent and the electricity bill settled and often a look around before returning the deposit, and a word with the family downstairs about the shared stairs helps. The handful of apartment blocks ask for a few days' notice. Government, bank and university quarters, and BSF housing at Meru, each go back through their own office after an inspection, and we load on the eve of it.

Where the truck can stand
A mid-sized truck gets down most colony roads, and many compounds have room to back in. The old market lanes do not, and a smaller vehicle carries goods out to the main road. On the older colony roads near the lake, low branches and overhead cables can catch a tall truck, so the height is checked. The highway through town is busy with coal and goods traffic, and a truck loading beside it uses a side road where one exists.

Traffic and timing
Ram Navami shapes Hazaribagh's calendar more than anything else. Processions with tableaux and akharas go through the town over two or three days and nights, and central roads close for much of that time. Muharram and Durga Puja also bring processions. On ordinary days traffic is light except around Jhanda Chowk at midday. Weekday mornings suit loading, and in summer the heavy work is done by noon.

Weather and the months to plan around
Being on the plateau, Hazaribagh is milder than the plains in summer, though May afternoons still reach 40°C. Winters are properly cold, with nights near 5°C in December and January, which is comfortable for packing but makes for a slow start in the morning. Heavy monsoon rain falls from mid June into September, and the approach roads through the forests to the north get slippery. October to March is the best stretch for moving.

Can I move house during Ram Navami in Hazaribagh?
Better not, if the house is anywhere near the centre. The processions run for days and nights, roads are closed or crowded, and a truck may not get through at all. Colonies on the edge of town are less affected, but the highway and the main junctions still slow down. Share your preferred date and we will tell you how close it falls to the processions.

How long does a move to Ranchi take?
Ranchi is about 95 km off, roughly half a day with loading, so the unloading happens the same afternoon. The road passes through Ramgarh and the Chutupalu ghat, which slows down with heavy trucks and takes longer in the monsoon. Does the December cold affect a move?
Only a little. Mornings are cold and misty, so the crew starts a bit later and works through the day, and the dry air is kind to wooden furniture and cartons. Daylight ends early in December, so the loading is planned to finish by late afternoon. Keep a blanket out of the cartons for the first night.
