Over much of it, water, power and roads are run by Tata Steel's own utilities company, and its quarters range from the bungalows of Northern Town to rows of two storey blocks in Kadma, Sonari, Baridih and Sidhgora. Telco Colony is Tata Motors' township. Outside the company area the city changes character: Jugsalai is a crowded old trading town, and Mango, across the Subarnarekha, has filled up with private apartment blocks.
That shapes a move here. Leaving a company quarter means an inspection by the town division and a final utilities account before the keys go back, and a Northern Town bungalow can hold a garden's worth of pots and a garage full of old furniture. The two storey blocks have broad stairs, which helps. In Mango and along Dimna Road the towers have lifts and societies with fixed moving hours, while Jugsalai's houses are narrow and tall and sit on lanes where a truck cannot stop.
Tata Steel's works and the Tata Motors plant bring engineers and managers on transfer, and the Adityapur industrial area across the Kharkai is full of auto parts units with a large workforce. XLRI, NIT Jamshedpur and MGM Medical College add students and faculty. Company transfers take families to the Tata Steel plants at Kalinganagar and Meramandali in Odisha and to Tata Motors' factories in the west of the country, and graduates leave for Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi NCR.

Bistupur to Mango is about 8 km and Sonari to Telco nearer 12 km, distances a truck covers quickly on a clear road, and a 2 BHK moves in one working day. The catch is the bridges. The Mango bridge over the Subarnarekha and the Kharkai bridge to Adityapur jam at shift change and in the evening, and a loaded truck caught on either can lose an hour. A move between Adityapur and Jamshedpur counts as a move within the city.

Jugsalai

A Tata Steel quarter goes back after the company's town division inspects it and the utilities account is closed, and the date you are given is the date the house must be empty. Telco Colony follows a similar routine through Tata Motors. Private societies in Mango, on Dimna Road and in Adityapur generally want notice to the secretary, dues cleared and a daytime move, and a tenant may need the owner's consent in writing. A Jugsalai family house has no office, only neighbours who share a narrow staircase.

Where the truck can stand
The company town is kind to trucks, with broad roads, trees set back from the kerb and space outside most quarters, and a 17 or 19 ft truck reaches almost every door in Bistupur, Kadma, Sonari and Telco. Sakchi's back lanes and most of Jugsalai are another matter, and a pickup makes the trips there. In Mango some colony roads off Dimna Road narrow suddenly, so a video call showing the approach comes before the quote. Old trees in Northern Town hang low over a few gates, which matters for a tall container.

Traffic and timing
Shift changes at the steel works and the Telco plant fill the roads around Sakchi, Bistupur and Golmuri with buses and two-wheelers, and the bridges back up at office hours. Heavy trucks face restrictions on the city roads through long parts of the day. Founder's Day on 3 March lights up Jubilee Park and draws crowds to Bistupur for several evenings. Durga Puja, the Ram Navami processions and Chhath at the river ghats also close roads, and a move near them goes better on another day.

Weather and the months to plan around
Jamshedpur gets properly hot. May afternoons reach 43°C or more, so loading starts early and a fridge or television never waits in a closed truck at noon. Evening storms in April and May bring strong wind and short, heavy rain. Monsoon rain is steady from mid June into September, and when dams upstream release water, the low colonies along the Subarnarekha and Kharkai can flood. Between November and February the city is dry and mild, and packing and carrying go far easier.

How do I hand back a Tata Steel quarter on time?
Get the inspection date from the town division first and plan backwards from it. Packing happens the day before, the truck is loaded early on the inspection morning, and the quarter is left empty, with the company's own fittings untouched. Close the utilities account in good time. The bill and inventory can be made out to Tata Steel or to your new employer, whichever is paying.
Will the Mango bridge hold up my move?
It can, at the wrong hour. The old bridge carries a large share of the traffic between Mango and the rest of the city, and at shift change or in the evening a loaded truck may crawl across it for the best part of an hour. We time the crossing for mid morning or early afternoon, and a move from Mango to Sonari or Kadma starts early.
Can you move a Jugsalai house with a godown attached?
Yes. We look at both on the survey and price the godown as its own load, so the household figure is not mixed up with the stock. The lanes in Jugsalai are narrow, so the main truck stands on the wider road while a pickup makes the runs, starting before the shops open. Stock travels with its own invoice.
I am moving to Tata Steel Kalinganagar. How long will the goods take?
Kalinganagar is roughly 300 km south. Goods leaving Jamshedpur at breakfast time usually reach the new quarters late that night or early next day, whichever the township's move-in hours allow.
