Shifting homes in Ranchi
Ranchi grew in patches, and each patch houses people differently. The HEC township at Dhurwa is a spread of 1960s quarters in low blocks on wide roads, and the new Assembly and High Court buildings stand on the same side of the city. MECON's staff live in the Shyamali colony at Doranda, and CCL's officers around Gandhinagar on Kanke Road. Lalpur, Harmu, Ashok Nagar and Bariatu mix family houses with apartment blocks of four to eight storeys, while Upper Bazar and Main Road remain the old trading core, with homes above the shops.
The ground here is uneven, and that shows on moving day. Colonies on the slopes near Morabadi and Bariatu can have a steep, narrow lane down to the gate, and an HEC quarter usually means two or three flights of stairs with no lift. Newer blocks on Kanke Road and in Lalpur have lifts, though many are too small for a wardrobe or a double door fridge, which then go down by the stairs. In Upper Bazar the goods leave through a narrow passage beside a shop to a vehicle waiting in the lane.
As the state capital, Ranchi receives a steady flow of government postings, along with officers of CCL, MECON and HEC and staff of the railway division at Hatia. RIMS at Bariatu, BIT at Mesra, Ranchi University, IIM Ranchi and the national law university bring doctors, faculty and students on fixed terms, and the army is stationed at Dipatoli. Graduates leave for jobs in Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad and Kolkata, and families move back and forth with Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Hazaribagh as work and schooling change.

Packers and movers charges in Ranchi
Kanke Road to Dhurwa is roughly 15 km, Harmu to Lalpur about 6 km and Bariatu to Doranda nearer 10 km. That puts most Ranchi moves within a morning's drive, with a 2 BHK out of the old flat before lunch and arranged in the new one by dusk. A big house with a full store room runs into a second day. The drive slows on Main Road, at Kutchery Chowk and Albert Ekka Chowk, and through Kantatoli, while an HEC stairwell or an Upper Bazar passage can take longer than the drive itself.

Areas we cover in Ranchi
A landmark is often more use to us than an address, because it tells us the approach.
Kanke Road and Gandhinagar
Apartment blocks and CCL's colony on the road north towards Kanke. Official convoys can hold traffic for a few minutes, so the truck loads off the main carriageway.
Lalpur and Kantatoli
Central and crowded, with coaching centres, hostels and flats above shops. Parking disappears by mid morning, so these moves start early and the truck does not linger.
Dhurwa and the HEC sectors
Low blocks of HEC quarters on broad township roads near the new Assembly. The truck reaches the stairwell easily, and the real work is the carry down two or three floors.
Upper Bazar and Main Road
The old wholesale market, jammed with handcarts and delivery vans from mid morning. A small vehicle comes in at dawn and runs the goods out to the main truck.
Bariatu and Morabadi
Houses and flats on sloping ground near RIMS and the Morabadi ground. Some approach lanes are too steep or tight for a long truck to turn in.
Harmu and Argora
Housing board houses and newer flats off the Harmu bypass. Roads are decent, and the only question is parking in the narrower inner lanes.

Society and building rules
In the Lalpur, Bariatu and Kanke Road societies, the secretary likes several days' warning of a shifting date, with maintenance paid and the work done in daylight, and a few insist that tenants produce a signed note from the landlord before the guard will let furniture out. HEC, MECON and CCL quarters are handed back through their own estate or town offices after an inspection, and railway quarters at Hatia follow the division's procedure. At Dipatoli the crew and vehicle details go in ahead for the gate. In each case the handover date fixes the loading day.

Where the truck can stand
Dhurwa, the Doranda colonies, Harmu and the Ring Road side take a 17 ft truck to the door. Main Road, Upper Bazar, Hindpiri and the lanes behind Lalpur do not, and there the truck stands on the nearest wide road while a pickup ferries the goods. On the slopes of Bariatu and Morabadi some lanes are too steep or tight to reverse out of, which the survey picks up. Red earth lanes in the newer colonies on the edge of town turn soft in the rains, and a smaller truck is safer there.

Traffic and timing
Large goods vehicles are kept out of central Ranchi for much of the day, so a big truck working inside the city uses the permitted hours or hands over to a smaller one. Main Road, Kutchery Chowk, Albert Ekka Chowk, Kantatoli and Booty More are slowest at office and school times. Ram Navami is the day to avoid, when processions with tall flags fill Main Road and Upper Bazar into the night. Sarhul, the Rath Mela at Jagannathpur and Durga Puja, which ends with the Ravan Dahan at Morabadi, also close roads.

Weather and the months to plan around
The plateau keeps Ranchi a few degrees cooler than the plains, though May afternoons can still reach 40°C. The weeks before the monsoon bring sudden late afternoon storms with strong wind and a great deal of lightning, so the truck is closed before the sky darkens. The monsoon runs from mid June to September and turns unpaved colony lanes into red mud. Winter nights fall to single figures, which suits a long day of packing, and the gentlest months for moving here are October, November and February.

Can you fit my move around the handover of an HEC or CCL quarter?
Yes. Tell us the inspection date the estate office has fixed, and we finish packing and loading on the eve of it, with the quarter left empty and its own fittings in place. If your organisation is paying, we address the quote and the GST bill to it and attach a full goods list. Your car or scooter can come too, separately, on a carrier.
Is Ram Navami a bad time to move in Ranchi?
Near the centre, yes. On the main procession day Main Road, Upper Bazar and the roads towards the Tapovan temple fill with akharas and flags from afternoon until late at night, and vehicles are held back. A move in Dhurwa or on the Ring Road side is less affected. Give us your dates and we will say which days around the festival to keep clear.
I am a student leaving BIT Mesra. Can you send my things home?
Yes. Cartons from a hostel room, a mattress and a two-wheeler make a light load, and the bike goes separately on a carrier. If home is far away, we can look for a truck already going in that direction. Sharing one costs less and is slower, and it is never certain. The campus empties within days at semester end, so fix a date early.
Can you move us from Ranchi to Jamshedpur in one day?
Yes. Jamshedpur is about 130 km down the Tata road, which includes the slow ghat stretch at Taimara, so a load that leaves by mid morning is unloaded in the afternoon. If the new home is a Tata Steel quarter or a society in Kadma or Sonari, send us its handover or move-in rules when you book.
