Shifting homes across Jharkhand
Jharkhand sits on the Chota Nagpur plateau, a country of low hills, forest and rivers, with Ranchi at around 650 m. Its cities grew around what lies under the ground and what is made from it. Jamshedpur is the Tata steel town, Bokaro was built around the SAIL plant, and Dhanbad is the coal capital, with Ramgarh and Hazaribagh also on the coalfields. Ranchi is the capital and the seat of government, and Deoghar, in the north-east, is a temple town that has grown with its airport and AIIMS.
That history means many homes in the industrial towns belong to employers. Tata Steel quarters across Bistupur, Sonari and Kadma, SAIL's numbered sectors in Bokaro, and the coal company colonies around Dhanbad and Ranchi all have estate offices, allotment letters and a handover date that the move has to meet. Private housing is a mix of independent houses and newer apartment blocks in Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad, and the old bazaars of Ranchi and Dhanbad have lanes that need a smaller vehicle.
Transfers drive much of the traffic. Tata Steel, Tata Motors, SAIL, Coal India's BCCL and CCL, HEC in Ranchi and the power plants move engineers and their families, and government postings keep Ranchi busy. IIT (ISM) in Dhanbad, XLRI and NIT in Jamshedpur, BIT Mesra and IIM Ranchi bring students and faculty. Many who grow up here leave for jobs in Kolkata, Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Hyderabad, and Kolkata, about 400 km from Ranchi, is the nearest metro.

Homes and buildings
The company towns are planned all the way through, with numbered quarters in rows, wide roads and room for a truck at almost every door. Quarters come in grades, from compact units for junior staff to bungalows for senior officers, and each type has its own layout of stairs and rooms. Outside the townships, Ranchi's Harmu, Kanke Road, Lalpur and Bariatu are independent houses and apartment blocks, while Deoghar and Hazaribagh are mostly family houses with a courtyard or garden. Older Ranchi, around Upper Bazar, has tight lanes.

Between cities
NH 19, the old GT Road, crosses the north of the state past Barhi, Bagodar and Dhanbad on its way into Bengal. From Ranchi, roads go north to Ramgarh and Hazaribagh, dropping through the Chutupalu ghat on the way, south-east to Jamshedpur through forested hills, and east to Bokaro and Dhanbad. Distances are short, Ranchi to Jamshedpur about 130 km and Dhanbad to Bokaro about 45, but plateau roads climb and bend, and a loaded truck takes them slowly. Stray cattle and village markets on the smaller roads slow things further.

Moving into or out of Jharkhand
Nothing about the state's rules is unusual for household goods. A family's own used belongings are not sold goods, so the truck carries a packing list and your declaration and does not usually need an e-way bill. What takes time are the employer's papers: the no-dues from the estate or township office before quarters are accepted back, and gate passes for the truck and crew. A car that will live outside Jharkhand beyond 12 months needs re-registering in its new state once the JH registering office has issued an NOC, and eligible employees can take BH series plates instead.

Weather and the months to plan around
The plateau gives Ranchi milder summers than the plains, though May still touches 40°C, and Jamshedpur and Dhanbad are hotter, often past 43°C. From mid-June to September heavy rain and lightning storms sweep the plateau, and ghat roads turn slippery. Winters are dry and cool, with Ranchi nights in single figures. Shravani Mela fills Deoghar and the roads to it through the month of Shravan, and Durga Puja and Chhath crowd Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Ranchi in October and November. Between November and February the weather gives the least trouble.

We are vacating company quarters in Jamshedpur. What needs to be ready?
The date the company's estate office will take the quarters back, and any clearance it needs from you first, such as a no-dues. Plan the move for a day or two before that date, which leaves time to clean and return the keys. Township roads are wide, so the truck can usually stand at the door. A company paying for your next posting can have the quote and invoice in its own name.
Can we move in Deoghar during Shravani Mela?
It is difficult. For the whole month of Shravan, usually July into August, kanwariyas walk more than 100 km from Sultanganj in Bihar to Baba Baidyanath Dham, and roads into Deoghar are given over to them, with traffic diverted and heavy vehicles held back. Inside Deoghar a small tempo can sometimes do a short move very early, but anything that needs a big truck is better planned before or after the mela.
How long does a move from Ranchi to Kolkata take?
About 400 km, through Jamshedpur or through Purulia, a long day at the wheel with a full load. Goods packed and loaded in Ranchi usually reach a Kolkata address the next day, once the truck is past the city's daytime limits on goods vehicles. A consignment number lets you track it, and a car or bike can go on a carrier and arrive separately.
I am moving from a CCL posting in Ranchi to BCCL in Dhanbad. Will the paperwork suit my claim?
Yes. The quote is written and itemised, the inventory is signed at loading, and the GST invoice names the company as the paying party if it is paying. Coal company colonies need the gate and the quarters handover arranged with the colony office, so tell us the dates early. Ranchi to Dhanbad is about 160 km, a one-day move for most homes.
