Shifting homes in Durgapur
Durgapur was laid out in the 1950s around the steel plant, and it still reads like a plan. The plant township is divided into zones and sectors of quarters, mostly two to four storey blocks on tree-lined roads, with open grounds between them. City Centre was built as the commercial hub and has the newer apartment buildings, and Bidhannagar nearby is a mix of independent houses and flats. Benachity is the one part that grew on its own, around the market.
With broad roads and parking that is rarely a fight, Durgapur is an easy city for a truck. The work is inside the buildings. Plant quarters have stairs and no lift, and older ones often hold steel almirahs, divans and a working life's worth of things. City Centre towers have lifts that need booking. A quarter going back to the plant also has to be left empty and clean on a set date, so the packing is planned backwards from it.
Work here means SAIL's Durgapur Steel Plant and Alloy Steels Plant, the power stations, the private plants in the industrial belt, and NIT Durgapur with a ring of private engineering colleges around it. The army and air force stations at Panagarh are a short drive away. People leave on transfer to Bokaro, Rourkela and the other steel plants, on retirement to Kolkata, and after graduation to wherever the first job is.

Durgapur is compact, and nothing in it is far apart. B-Zone to City Centre is about 5 km, Bidhannagar to Benachity about 8 km, and a 2 BHK is emptied and settled into the new place the same day. Three things add hours: a walk-up quarter on the top floor, a tower lift booked in slots, and the Benachity market traffic. A move to Asansol, 45 km up NH 19, is also a one-day job, and so is Bardhaman in the other direction.

Society and building rules
Plant quarters come with a handover process: the quarter is inspected, and electricity and water are settled before the keys go back. We fit the loading around the inspection date you are given. Apartment buildings in City Centre and Bidhannagar are usually run by an owners' association that wants a few days' notice, dues cleared and the lift booked. Tenants moving out of a private flat should tell the owner early, since the association may check with the owner before letting furniture leave.

Where the truck can stand
Few cities in Bengal are as easy for a truck. The township roads are broad, most blocks have space in front, and a 17 ft or 19 ft truck can usually stand at the door. Benachity is the exception: the market lanes fill up by mid-morning, and a small tempo shuttles to a truck waiting on the main road. At some older quarter blocks the path from road to staircase is long, and we add hands for it instead of trying to bring the truck closer.

Traffic and timing
Durgapur's traffic peaks at plant shift changes, when the roads near the plant gates and onto NH 19 fill with buses, bikes and cars. City Centre is busy in the evening and Benachity through the day. Heavy trucks for the plants and the coal belt use NH 19 at all hours, which matters more for a long move than a local one. Durga Puja fills the township and City Centre with pandals and crowds, and the week around it is the one to avoid.

Weather and the months to plan around
The weather to plan around is the pre-monsoon. April and May are dry and fierce, with afternoons past 40°C, and kalbaishakhi storms can roll in late in the day with strong wind, dust and a burst of rain that soaks anything left on the pavement. So we load in the morning and keep the truck closed between trips. The monsoon, mid-June to September, is steady, and low roads clear quickly after a downpour. November to February is cool, dry and the best time to move.

Can you work to the handover date for my DSP quarter?
Yes. Give us the date the quarter will be inspected and we plan the packing and loading to finish before it, with a day in hand if the quarter is large. Your own furniture is taken apart and packed, and fittings that belong to the quarter stay where they are. If you are moving to another SAIL plant, the invoice can be made out in the company's name.
I am finishing at NIT Durgapur. Can you move a hostel room or a rented room?
Yes. A few cartons, a mattress, books, a cooler or a bike are priced among the smallest moves we do. For a move out of the state we can look into sending it as a part load, cheaper and slower than a vehicle of its own, though only if other goods are headed the same way. Book early for May and June, when a whole batch leaves together.
Is a move from Durgapur to Kolkata a one-day job?
Usually, yes. It is about 170 km down NH 19, three to four hours for a loaded truck, so a flat packed in the morning can be unloaded in Kolkata by night if the building there allows it. The catch is at the Kolkata end, where many roads are closed to goods vehicles in the daytime, so we sometimes deliver the next morning instead.
