The railway made it a town in the 19th century, and the coal mines and the Burnpur steel works made it a city, which still has the shape of a railway and coal town. Market streets around Court More and Station Road have shops below and flats above, and across the tracks Railpar is dense and closely built.
Housing is a patchwork. Railway quarters sit in colonies near Asansol Junction, IISCO's township at Burnpur has its own quarters and bungalows, and Eastern Coalfields, with its head office at Sanctoria, keeps colonies all across the coal belt. Ushagram, Apcar Garden and Sen Raleigh Road have the newer apartment blocks. If you rent, some also want to hear from your landlord, so ask for a short letter well before the day.

Where the truck can stand
Along GT Road and in the market around Court More a truck can stop to load but not to park all morning, and the traffic police will move it on. Railpar's lanes and parts of the old town take only a small vehicle. Colony roads in Burnpur and the railway settlements are wider, and a full truck can stand at the block. Coal trucks and dumpers share the roads towards Raniganj and Jamuria and throw up dust, so the truck's doors stay shut while it waits.

Traffic and timing
GT Road through Asansol is busy from about 8 am until late at night, and Court More is worst at school and office times. Heavy vehicles for the coal belt use the highway through the night, so a long-distance load avoids the evening rush and leaves either early or late. Railway and plant shift changes fill the roads near the colonies. Chhath, Durga Puja and Kali Puja crowd the markets and some roads for several days, and the weeks before Diwali are the busiest for the shops.

Weather and the months to plan around
Asansol is one of the hottest places in West Bengal. From April to early June, afternoons of 42°C to 45°C are not unusual and a hot, dusty wind blows across the coal belt, so we start at dawn, pause the loading in the worst hours and keep a fridge or a television out of a truck parked in the sun. The monsoon brings relief and some waterlogged roads. Winters are dry with chilly mornings, and November to February is the easy stretch.
