Shifting homes in Bokaro
Bokaro Steel City was laid out in the 1960s around SAIL's plant, and it is still organised by number. The township runs from Sector 1 to Sector 12, each split into lettered blocks, and a BSL address gives sector, block and quarter, so a driver finds the door without asking. Quarters are two to four storey blocks, with larger houses for senior officers, set among trees and open grounds. Outside the township, Chas grew up on its own as a dense market town, and Chira Chas has become the city's apartment district.
A move out of a BSL quarter comes down to the stairs and the paperwork. Most blocks have no lift, so beds and almirahs come down two or three flights, and the quarter is inspected and the power and water account settled with the Town Administration before the keys go back. Chas is the opposite case: private houses and flats on lanes too narrow for a truck. Chira Chas has multi-storey buildings with lifts and associations of their own, and they want notice.
The steel plant and its contractors are the main employers, with Vedanta's steel plant at Siyaljori, the industrial area at Balidih and the DVC power station at Chandrapura nearby. Bokaro General Hospital, the city's large schools and its engineering and management colleges bring doctors and teachers. SAIL moves its people between Bokaro, Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur, and when they retire many stay on in Chas or Chira Chas instead of going home. Their children mostly leave for jobs in Bangalore, Delhi NCR and Kolkata.

Distances are small. Sector 4 to Chira Chas is about 8 km, and even the far side of the township to Chas is under 15 km, leaving a 2 BHK plenty of daylight to spare. Most of the time is spent on quarter block staircases, on the Town Administration's inspection, and on getting a pickup in and out of Chas bazaar. Dhanbad, about 40 km off, fits in a single day as well.

Sector 4 and City Centre
The township's commercial centre, with shops, banks and quarter blocks behind them. Parking is easy in the early morning and tight once the market fills by late morning.
The township sectors
Two to four storey BSL blocks without lifts, set back from wide roads. The truck stands near the stairwell, and the time goes on the stairs and the yard in between.
Cooperative Colony
Private houses built by plant employees on their own plots, with roads narrower than the sectors. A 14 ft truck is the safe size here.
Chas
A crowded market town next to the township, with houses packed along narrow lanes and the Purulia road traffic at its edge. A pickup shuttles to the truck.
Chira Chas
Apartment towers along the roads out of Chas, most with lifts and an association that sets moving hours. Access from the main road is good.
Balidih
The industrial area on the city's edge, ringed by staff flats and houses. Good roads, with plant and contractor traffic at its worst at shift change.

Society and building rules
BSL quarters are vacated through the Town Administration, which inspects the quarter and settles the electricity and water it supplies before the keys go back, and a missing fitting can hold the clearance. Give us that date first. Apartment associations in Chira Chas ask for notice several days out, a clean dues record and daylight hours, and tenants bring an owner's letter. Houses in Chas and Cooperative Colony need only the landlord's agreement, plus a warning to the neighbours that the lane will be blocked for a while.

Where the truck can stand
The sectors were drawn for heavy traffic, and a 19 ft truck can stand at nearly every block. The limit is often the walk from the road to the stairwell across a yard. Chas is the hard part: the bazaar and the lanes off the main road are crowded from mid morning, so the big truck parks outside the bazaar and a pickup runs in. In Cooperative Colony and some Chira Chas lanes, parked cars leave room for one vehicle, and a 14 ft truck works better.

Traffic and timing
Plant shift changes send a wave of buses, cycles and bikes along the roads to the works gates, and Naya More and City Centre are slow at those hours. Chas bazaar is packed from late morning. Durga Puja is big across the sectors, with pandals on the main roads for a week, and Chhath fills the ghats for two days. An early weekday morning between shift changes is the best time to load.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer in Bokaro is long and hot, with May afternoons close to 44°C, and the crew starts at dawn so the heavy carrying is over before noon. Evening storms in April and May can bring hail and strong gusts. The monsoon, June to September, is steady, and the red earth around the new colonies turns to slush. Winter is dry and cool, with misty mornings in January, and November to February is the kindest time for a move.

What does the Town Administration need before I leave my BSL quarter?
Generally an inspection of the quarter and a clearance for the electricity and water the plant supplies, after which the keys are taken back. The exact papers depend on your grade and department, so ask early. Packing is done a day early, the loading takes place on the handover morning, and the plant's fittings stay where they are, so nothing we do holds the clearance up.
I am being transferred to Bhilai or Rourkela. Can the bill be made out to SAIL?
Yes. The quote, the GST invoice and the itemised inventory can be in the company's name for your claim, and the truck carries a consignment number you can check on. Give us the handover date here and your joining date there, and the transit is planned between them. Any car is loaded onto a carrier of its own.
Can a truck reach a house in Chas?
Sometimes to the door, often not. The main road through Chas takes a truck, but the lanes off the bazaar are narrow and crowded by mid morning. We start early, keep the big truck on the main road and use a pickup for the lane, and the extra trips appear in the written quote. A video call of the lane settles it before the day.

The drive is well under 15 km, so yes. A quarter is usually packed over a day, since a working life fills a lot of cupboards, and the move itself follows the next morning.
