Shifting homes in Varanasi
Varanasi's old city runs along the Ganga from Assi to Raj Ghat, a maze of galis too narrow for anything wider than a motorcycle. Houses there rise four or five floors, with steep stairs, small rooms and a roof terrace. Away from the river the city opens out: Sigra, Mahmoorganj and Lanka have flats and family houses, the Cantonment and Nadesar have bungalows, and new apartments keep rising on the roads to Sarnath, Shivpur and Babatpur.
That gives a mover two kinds of job. In the galis nothing reaches the door, so furniture is dismantled upstairs and carried to wherever a small vehicle can wait, sometimes a few hundred metres off. In the colonies and along the ring road the work is ordinary: a lift or a staircase, a truck at the gate and the evening traffic at Lahartara or Chowkaghat to beat.
BHU and IIT BHU are the biggest single reason people move here, bringing faculty, doctors for the Sir Sunderlal Hospital, research staff and students. Banaras Locomotive Works and the railway division bring transfers, and so do the courts, the banks and the Cantonment. Tourism, the temples and the silk trade keep many families in the old city for generations.

Packers and movers charges in Varanasi
Crossing Varanasi, from Assi to Shivpur or from Lanka to Pandeypur, is 10 to 15 km, half an hour on a clear road. The roads are rarely clear. Godowlia, Lanka, Chowkaghat and Lahartara slow a loaded truck badly, and the ring road only helps for the northern colonies. A flat in the colonies is finished in a day. A gali house, with its long carry, often takes two.

No vehicle reaches most doors. Goods are carried by hand to a small vehicle on the road above, and the stairs inside these houses are steep.

Campus quarters need the university's permission for the truck. Outside, the road at the BHU gate jams from morning to night.
Sigra and Mahmoorganj
Flats and family houses close to the centre, with space for a 14 ft truck on most streets if it arrives before the shops open.
Cantonment and Nadesar
Bungalows, hotels and officers' quarters on wide roads. The easiest part of Varanasi to load, though cantonment entry needs clearance.
Shivpur, Pandeypur and the Sarnath road

Society and building rules
Most Varanasi homes are family houses, and nobody issues a gate pass. Apartment blocks on the Sarnath and Shivpur side have a society office that wants the date and time, and a few ask for dues to be cleared. BHU quarters, BLW railway quarters and cantonment houses each have a vacating process with a date for handing back the keys, and the loading is planned to that date. In the galis, let the neighbours know, since the crew will fill the lane for a few hours.

Where the truck can stand
The old city decides everything. The stretch from Godowlia to Dashashwamedh is kept for pedestrians much of the time, the galis around Vishwanath and Chowk are shoulder-wide in places, and the crew carries from the door to an e-rickshaw or small tempo, then on to the truck standing on a road like Luxa or Bhelupur. Elsewhere, a 14 ft truck reaches most homes, and the colonies to the north and along the ring road take a 17 ft one.

Traffic and timing
Traffic is heavy through the day at Lanka, Godowlia, Chowkaghat and Lahartara, and the old city is quietest before 8 am. Mondays in Shravan, Dev Deepawali in November and the big bathing days draw crowds that close the roads to the ghats, sometimes all day. Trucks are barred from the centre in daylight, so a long-distance truck is loaded to leave in the evening.

Weather and the months to plan around
Varanasi is very hot in May and June, often 45°C, and humid from July. The monsoon raises the Ganga in August and September, and in a high year the river covers the lower ghats and floods low colonies near Nagwa, Samne Ghat and along the Varuna. Moves near the river wait for the water to drop. In December and January, cold fog makes trains and trucks run late. Outside the fog weeks, October to March is the easiest season.

Can you move a house in the galis near Dashashwamedh?
Yes, with planning. We see the house and the gali first and work out how far the goods have to be carried. Heavy furniture is dismantled upstairs, the crew carries each piece to a small vehicle, and the truck is parked at the closest road it can use. Pick a date away from festivals and bathing days, when the galis are packed.
I am BHU faculty moving out of campus quarters. What do you need?
The date the quarters must be vacated and the campus gate we should use. Entry for the truck and crew is arranged with university security in advance. You get an inventory and a GST invoice for reimbursement, and a move to another university is planned backwards from your joining date there.
Does the Ganga in flood affect moves in Varanasi?
For homes near the river, yes, in August and September. In a high-water year the lower ghats and some low colonies are under water for days and lanes close. We watch the river level before fixing the date. Away from the river, the monsoon rarely stops a move, and in those months we add a plastic sheet beneath the outer wrapping.
Can you move us from Varanasi to Prayagraj or Lucknow?
Yes. Prayagraj is about 120 km and Lucknow about 310 km, both on good highways. A 2 BHK bound for Prayagraj is loaded in the morning and delivered the same evening, while Lucknow is usually a next-morning delivery. For an old city address, add time for the carry to the truck.
