Old Gaya is a pilgrim town on the west bank of the Phalgu, built around the Vishnupad temple, with the houses of the Gayawal pandas along its lanes and rocky hills behind. Newer Gaya spreads out along Swarajpuri Road, AP Colony and the road to Bodh Gaya, with independent houses and a growing number of apartment blocks. Bodh Gaya, about 15 km south, is monasteries, hotels and the university, and keeps its own rhythm.
Houses in old Gaya are narrow and tall, some built against the hillside, with steep stairs, and the lanes near the temple barely let a rickshaw through. The colonies are easier: the truck pulls up outside and the carry is short. Families tend to own their houses and keep furniture of solid wood that has not moved in years, so the survey decides whether the main truck reaches the door or a small vehicle works from the nearest road.

Society and building rules
Gaya has few large housing societies. For independent houses and small apartment blocks, a word with the neighbours and the owner is usually all it takes. Army quarters at the OTA station are handed back under the unit's rules, with vehicle and crew entry cleared beforehand. University and medical college quarters go back through their estate offices. In Bodh Gaya, monasteries and hotels usually want a move done outside guest hours, early in the morning or late in the evening.

Where the truck can stand
A full truck can reach most colony houses, the Civil Lines bungalows and the army station. It cannot go into the lanes around Vishnupad, Chand Chaura or the older bazaars, where the crew carries goods to a small tempo on the nearest road that takes one. Some old town houses sit up steps from the lane, which lengthens the carry. In Bodh Gaya, the roads nearest the Mahabodhi temple are restricted, so the truck stands further out.

Traffic and timing
Pitrapaksha, the fortnight in September or October when pilgrims come to offer pind daan, fills Gaya's roads, lanes and hotels, and a move anywhere near Vishnupad in those weeks is not practical. Bodh Gaya is busiest from October to March, especially in December and January. Day to day, traffic is heaviest around the station and the old bazaars from late morning, and in summer the heat pushes every start earlier.

Weather and the months to plan around
Gaya is among the hottest places in Bihar. Afternoons in May and early June can touch 45°C, the rocky hills around the town hold the heat, and hot winds blow for much of the day, so the crew begins at sunrise and has the loading done by late morning. Gaya's share of monsoon rain, late June to September, is modest by Bihar standards. Winters are cold, with foggy mornings in late December and January that slow trucks on the highway. November, February and March are the easy months.

Can you move a house near the Vishnupad temple?
Yes, though no vehicle goes down those lanes. The crew carries the goods to a small tempo on the nearest usable road, and the main truck waits beyond it. Heavy almirahs and beds are taken apart first. Please keep clear of the Pitrapaksha fortnight, when the lanes are full of pilgrims and a move may not be possible at all.

Is Bodh Gaya harder to move in than Gaya?
In the winter season, yes. From October to March the roads near the Mahabodhi temple are restricted and crowded, and hotels and monasteries prefer moves outside guest hours. In the hot months and the monsoon Bodh Gaya is quiet and quick to work in. It is about 15 km from Gaya town, so a move between the two is a one-day job.
Can you move us from Gaya to Patna in a day?
Yes. Patna is about 100 km, roughly three hours by road, and a 2 BHK packed in the morning reaches Patna the same day. Big trucks are barred from many Patna roads in the daytime, so a large load may be unloaded in the evening or early next morning, depending on where you are moving to.
