Bardhaman is a district town with a long past. The Maharajas of Burdwan ruled from here, and their palace at Rajbati and the Curzon Gate on BC Road still mark the centre. The old town around them is two and three storey brick houses on narrow lanes, many with a courtyard and a steep inside stair. Newer growth has spread outward, with small apartment blocks and independent houses in the newer colonies and along the roads towards NH 19.

A full truck is fine on the wider roads: GT Road, the approach to Nababhat and the university roads at Golapbag. In the old town and around Rajbati the lanes narrow, and the goods come out in a smaller vehicle or on foot. BC Road has the width but not the space, since shops, parked bikes and totos fill both sides, and early morning is the only time a truck can stand there long enough to load.

Traffic and timing
Bardhaman is busiest from about 10 am to 8 pm, when BC Road, Tinkonia and the station area are full, so a morning load avoids most of it. In November and December the aman paddy harvest brings tractors and lorries onto the roads around the rice mills, and NH 19 is slower with them. Winter fog on NH 19 holds up long-distance loads in the early mornings of December and January. Durga Puja fills the town centre with pandals for a week.

Summer from April to June is hot and humid, often near 40°C, with the odd evening storm. The monsoon from June to September is steady, it fills the low lanes of the old town after heavy rain, and the Damodar to the south runs high. Old houses with thick walls stay damp through the rains, so we check wooden furniture for moisture before wrapping it. Aim for the cool, dry weeks between November and February.

Is Bardhaman to Kolkata a one-day move?
Yes. It is about 100 km, two to three hours on NH 19. The truck is loaded by late morning and emptied at the Kolkata end later that day, with the timing set by the building and the parking there. In December and January, early fog on the highway can hold the truck up for an hour or so.
Is harvest season a bad time to move?
