Shifting homes in Dharamshala
Dharamshala comes in two levels. The lower town, around Kotwali Bazaar, Kachehri and Shyam Nagar, is the Kangra district headquarters, with government offices, colleges, the cricket stadium and ordinary two and three storey houses. About 10 km of hairpin bends above it sits McLeodganj, home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan administration in exile, where monasteries, guest houses and cafés crowd a narrow spur under the Dhauladhar range.
Housing follows the slope. Down below, houses have a road at the gate or a short flight of steps. Up in McLeodganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot, buildings climb over each other, lanes are too narrow for a car, and many rooms are reached only by footpaths and stairs. Much of the moving up there is small: Tibetan families, volunteers, teachers and long-stay visitors shifting a room or a flat, often with more books than furniture.
Government transfers are the steady business of the lower town, from the district offices, the colleges and the Central University's Dharamshala campus, and the state assembly's winter session at Tapovan brings its own traffic. The army station at Yol is 10 km away. People leave for Chandigarh, Delhi and the plains for work, or move within the Kangra valley towards Palampur and Kangra town.

The lower town to McLeodganj is about 10 km up the hill, and Sidhpur to Kotwali Bazaar about 5 km. A move within the lower town fits in a morning. One that starts or ends above McLeodganj takes the whole day, since the pickup climbs the hill several times and the crew carries the last stretch on foot. The narrow road through McLeodganj's square and the taxi queue at the top are where the hours go.

Kotwali Bazaar and Kachehri
The lower town's market and office area. A truck can get here, but parking is scarce and the bazaar is crowded from mid morning, so loading begins early.
McLeodganj
A small square ringed by one-way loops of narrow road, with lanes too tight for a car. A pickup reaches the roads, and the crew walks the rest.
Bhagsu and Dharamkot
Guest houses and rented rooms along steep footpaths above McLeodganj. Much of Dharamkot has no road to the door, so goods travel a long way by hand.
Forsyth Ganj and Naddi
Quieter hillside roads towards Naddi, narrow and winding, with houses perched above or below the road on steps.
Sidhpur and Sidhbari
Newer houses on gentler ground below the town, near the Gyuto monastery. A 14 ft truck often reaches the gate here.
Yol Cantonment
The army station on the Palampur road, with passes for vehicles and crew, and quarters handed back on a fixed date.

Society and building rules
Dharamshala has few apartment societies. In the lower town, a landlord or a government estate office is the one to settle with: rent, the electricity and water bills, and for quarters an inspection before handover. In McLeodganj and Bhagsu, many rooms are let by the month through a guest house owner who wants the room clear by a set hour, often before new tenants arrive. Yol quarters need gate passes and follow the station's own handover schedule.

Where the truck can stand
A full-size truck can reach the lower town, though parking at Kotwali Bazaar and Kachehri is limited to short stops. Above it, the road to McLeodganj is steep and winding, and the roads around the square run one way with nowhere to wait, so a pickup does the hill and loads fast at a bend or a lay-by. Bhagsu, Dharamkot and parts of Naddi are reached on foot, along paths that can be muddy. For a long move out, the goods are shifted onto a bigger truck in the lower town.

Traffic and timing
Tourists fill McLeodganj from April to June and again in October, and weekends are crowded all year, so an upper town move goes most smoothly on a weekday morning. The Dalai Lama's public teachings, Losar in February or March and his birthday on 6 July bring large gatherings near the Tsuglagkhang. Cricket match days at the stadium close roads in the lower town, and the assembly's winter session at Tapovan adds VIP traffic.

Weather and the months to plan around
Dharamshala is among the wettest towns in India, and from July to mid September rain can fall for days, with landslides on the roads up to McLeodganj and down to the plains. Packing in that season wraps every piece in polythene first, and loading waits out the heavy bursts. Winter brings cold, hail and some snow in the upper town, with the Dhauladhar white above it. October, November, March and early April are the months to choose.

Can you move a room in Dharamkot or Bhagsu, where there is no road?
Yes. The pickup waits at the nearest road, usually in Bhagsu or where the Dharamkot road ends, and the crew carries everything along the path. A room of books, bedding and a few pieces of furniture is a morning's work, and bulky pieces are taken apart where they stand. Tell us the path and roughly how many steps it has, so the right number of people turn up.
Does a monsoon move make sense here?
If the date cannot wait, yes. Each carton and piece of furniture is sealed in polythene before its outer wrap, the walk to the vehicle is covered where possible, and loading pauses in a downpour. Slips can shut the roads to McLeodganj and to the plains for hours, so a move out of Dharamshala in July or August gets a wider delivery window.
Can a truck reach McLeodganj?
A light pickup can, a full-size truck cannot. The road up is steep and winding, and the one-way loops around the square are narrow. For a move out of the upper town, the pickup brings everything down to the lower town, where the main truck is loaded. Both legs and the hand carry appear in the written quote.
I have been transferred to Shimla. How do you handle a move between two hill towns?
Both ends get their own plan. Here the pickup and the carry are sized for your house, and in Shimla the same is done for the new address, often with a long flight of steps. The drive is about 240 km, so goods loaded in the morning usually reach Shimla by evening. Your office gets a goods list and a GST bill for the claim.
