Shifting homes in Mandi
An old market town on the Beas, where the Suketi joins it, Mandi has so many temples that it is called the Varanasi of the hills. The old town around Chauhatta, Moti Bazaar and Seri Manch is a tangle of lanes, with stone and timber houses packed together and flights of steps running down to the river. The newer parts, Paddal, Khaliyar, Bhiuli and Gutkar, spread along the roads and slopes beyond.
Mandi is the headquarters of central Himachal, with divisional and district offices, the zonal hospital and Sardar Patel University, and its moves follow their transfers. IIT Mandi's campus at Kamand, in the Uhl valley about 15 km up the Kataula road, brings faculty, staff and students from across the country, and the medical college at Ner Chowk adds doctors. Campus moves come with fixed joining dates and an estate office at the other end.
An old town house is the hard case. Its rooms are small, its stairs steep and wooden, and the lane outside is often a flight of steps, so furniture comes apart indoors and goes out on the crew's shoulders to a pickup on the nearest road. Houses in Paddal or on the Ner Chowk side are simpler, with a road at the gate and room to load. The difference between the two can be half a day.

Packers and movers charges in Mandi
Mandi's newer areas lie within about 5 km of the centre, Ner Chowk is around 12 km down the highway, and Kamand about 15 km up the Uhl valley road. A move between any of them is a day's work. Inside the old town the carry is the slow part: a pickup can only get so close, and a family house with steps at both ends can fill a full day on its own.

The old centre, with narrow lanes, stepped streets and shops open from early morning. No vehicle reaches most homes, so the crew carries to a pickup.
Seri Manch and the town centre
The central square and market where Shivratri events are held. Parking is scarce, and a truck may only stand briefly.
Paddal
The open ground by the Beas that hosts the Shivratri fair, with houses and offices around it. Access is easy for most of the year.
Khaliyar and Bhiuli
Residential areas on the slopes, with houses above and below the road and some steep link roads that suit a smaller vehicle.
Kamand
IIT Mandi's campus in the Uhl valley, reached on a winding road. The gate needs vehicle details, and staff quarters go through the estate office.
Ner Chowk and Gutkar
The flatter Balh side towards the medical college, with new houses and colonies along the highway. A full truck reaches most gates.

Society and building rules
Mandi has no big housing societies. Tenants square the rent, bills and deposit with an owner who usually lives upstairs or downstairs. Government quarters go back to their departments after an inspection, and IIT Mandi's estate office handles campus housing with its own checklist and gate formalities for the vehicle and crew. In the old town, families share stairs and lanes, and a word before the day keeps the peace while furniture goes past their doors.

Where the truck can stand
The highway and the main roads through Paddal, Gutkar and the Ner Chowk side take a full-size truck. The old town does not: its lanes are narrow, stepped and crowded, and a pickup waits on the nearest road while the crew carries. On the slopes of Khaliyar and above the town, link roads are steep with tight bends. For a load leaving Mandi, the goods are brought down to a bigger truck on the highway.

Traffic and timing
The International Shivratri Fair is the event to plan around. For a week from Mahashivratri, in February or March, deities are carried into town from villages across the district, processions fill the old town and the Paddal ground hosts the fair, so moves in the centre wait until it is over. The highway towards Kullu is busy with tourists from April to June and at New Year. Early weekday loading avoids most of this.

Weather and the months to plan around
Mandi is low for a hill town, around 800 m, and its summers are warm, with June afternoons near 35°C. The monsoon is the hard season. Heavy rain from July to September raises the Beas and the Suketi, and slips close the highway towards Kullu beyond Pandoh, sometimes for days, when traffic goes round by Kataula. Winter is cool, with snow on the hills above but seldom in town. October, November and March are the kindest months for a move.

Our house is in the old town, down a flight of steps. How do you move it?
The pickup stops on the nearest road above or below the house, and the crew carries everything in between. Beds and almirahs come apart indoors, and heavy pieces go out with three or four people on them. We count the steps and check the turns over video, then write the carry and the crew size into the quote.
Can I move during Shivratri?
Outside the old town and Paddal, yes, with patience on the roads. Near the centre, the processions and fair crowds leave a pickup nowhere to stand for most of the week. If your house is close to Seri Manch or Paddal, choose a date a week before or after the fair.
I am joining IIT Mandi. How does a move into the Kamand campus work?
At booking, forward the estate office's rules for vehicles and crew. Your goods are packed at the old home with a room-by-room list and travel under a consignment number. A big truck brings them to Mandi, and if the campus road or the building needs a smaller vehicle, the load is shifted to one for the last stretch. The GST bill can carry the institute's name.
What if a landslide closes the highway on moving day?
The truck waits somewhere safe until the road reopens, or takes another road if one is open, such as the Kataula route towards Kullu. You are told where the load is. For a move between July and September we give a wider delivery window, and everything is sealed in polythene under its outer wrap.
