Shifting homes across Himachal Pradesh
Almost all of Himachal is mountain, and the height of a town tells you a lot about its move. The lower belt along the Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand borders, Baddi, Nalagarh, Paonta Sahib, Una and the floor of the Kangra valley, is warm and fairly level, with industrial estates and wider roads. The middle hills hold Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Sundarnagar, Dharamshala and Kullu, towns built on ridges and valley sides. Above them are Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, cold and remote, with a short road season.
In the hill towns the road is rarely at your door. Houses step down the slope below the road or climb above it, and a flat may be entered at the top floor with its rooms stacked underneath. So a Himachal move usually has three parts: a truck to the nearest point that takes it, a smaller vehicle on the narrow roads beyond, and a carry by hand down steps or along a path, sometimes with local porters who know the route. Two houses in the same Shimla ward can need completely different crews.
The Baddi, Barotiwala and Nalagarh belt is one of the country's largest pharmaceutical manufacturing clusters, and Paonta Sahib has its own pharma and industrial units, so plant staff transfer in and out all year. Shimla has the state government, the army's Training Command and SJVN, Dharamshala the Tibetan settlement at McLeod Ganj and the Central University, and Mandi has IIT Mandi at Kamand. Hydro projects, banks, schools and AIIMS Bilaspur bring more postings, and tourism moves hotel staff with the seasons.

Homes and buildings
Hill homes are built into the slope. Older ones in Shimla are timber-framed with tin roofs, steep wooden stairs and small doors, and in Kangra and Mandi, slate roofs and stone walls are common. Newer buildings are concrete, four to six floors on a hillside, often with a lift that is small or missing altogether. Solan and Baddi have apartment blocks for workers and staff, Paonta Sahib and Una have family houses on level plots, and army areas at Jutogh, Dagshai, Kasauli, Subathu and Yol keep their own quarters. Many houses are reached by steps alone.

Between cities
NH 5 climbs from Parwanoo past Dharampur and Solan to Shimla, now four-laned for much of the way, and carries on towards Narkanda and Kinnaur. From Kiratpur in Punjab, the Manali road climbs past Bilaspur to Sundarnagar and Mandi, with new tunnels and bypasses. Kangra and Dharamshala are reached from Pathankot or through Una, and Paonta Sahib lies on the Yamuna, close to Dehradun. Every hill road has blind bends, steep pitches and narrow bazaar stretches, and some town roads are closed to heavy trucks, so a smaller vehicle does that part.

Moving into or out of Himachal Pradesh
Household goods going into or out of Himachal are your own used belongings and are not being sold, so they move on a packing list and a declaration and normally need no e-way bill. For the car, the rule is 12 months: after that long in another state it should carry that state's registration, which starts with an NOC from the Himachal authority that issued its HP number. Eligible government, defence and multi-state private sector staff can use BH series plates. In Shimla, some central roads are sealed or restricted to vehicles and need a permit, so goods for those addresses are carried from the nearest open road.

Weather and the months to plan around
The monsoon, July to mid-September, is the riskiest time. Heavy rain triggers landslides and flash floods, and the Kiratpur-Manali and Shimla roads have been cut for days in recent years. Winter brings snow to Shimla, Narkanda and the higher towns, usually between late December and February, and black ice on shaded bends. The lower belt around Baddi, Una and Paonta is hot in May and June, while those same months are the tourist season in the middle hills, with jams on the Parwanoo-Shimla road. March to April and October to November are the easiest windows.

Our Shimla house is on a sealed road. Can the truck reach it?
Not to the door. Sealed roads in central Shimla are closed to vehicles except by permit, so plan on the load being carried. The truck or a smaller vehicle parks where vehicles are allowed, and from there the crew, often helped by local porters, carries each piece. Furniture is taken apart in the house to make the carry manageable. The route is looked at during the survey, and it decides the crew size.
I am being transferred from Baddi to Chandigarh. Is that a one-day move?
Yes. Baddi is only about 35 km from Chandigarh by road, and a flat there packs and moves within a day. The truck can usually reach Baddi's apartment blocks and staff housing directly, and the main thing to time around is traffic near the industrial areas at shift changes. When the employer pays, the GST invoice is raised to the company.
When does snow stop moves in Shimla?
On the days it falls and a few after, mostly between late December and February. Roads above Shimla, to Kufri and Narkanda, close first, and the town's own slopes turn icy on shaded bends. A loaded truck is not taken onto ice, so a winter move is given a spread of possible days. Solan and the lower towns see far less snow, so a move there is easier in the same months.
How long is a move from Mandi to Dharamshala?
About 150 km on hill roads through Jogindernagar, Baijnath and Palampur, which takes most of a day for a loaded truck. A household packed in Mandi is usually unloaded in Dharamshala the next day. The upper parts of Dharamshala, towards McLeod Ganj, have steep, narrow roads where a smaller vehicle takes over for the last stretch.
