Shifting homes in Mangalore
Mangalore is built over low hills, and that decides more about a move than anything else. A house may sit below the road with thirty steps down to its door, or above it at the top of a slope too steep for a loaded trolley. The older homes in Kodialbail, around Car Street and near the Bunder have Mangalore tile roofs, laterite walls and rooms of teak and rosewood. Kadri, Bejai, Falnir and Balmatta now have tall apartment blocks as well.
For a hill house the survey matters. We count the steps, check whether the path is wide enough for a sofa or has a sharp turn, and look at the slope up to the road. Heavy pieces sometimes go down on ropes, and a big household can mean an extra pair of hands. In the apartment blocks the work is ordinary: the lift, the association slot and the loading point.
Banking has long been a Mangalore trade, and Karnataka Bank still has its head office here, so bank staff come and go on transfer. The port at Panambur, MRPL at Kuthethur and the Baikampady industrial area bring engineers and officers. From Surathkal in the north to Deralakatte in the south is about 30 km on the highway, and most moves inside the city are far shorter, Kadri to Kankanady being about 5 km. A flat moves in a day. Society and building rules
Apartment associations in Kadri, Bejai and Falnir want notice of a move, a lift booking and, from tenants, confirmation from the owner. Plenty of flats here belong to people working in the Gulf, so the owner's permission may come by email from Dubai or Doha, and it is worth asking for it well before the day. Some buildings keep moves to daytime hours and want maintenance cleared first. Bank and company leases usually end with a joint inspection of the flat, and we fit the loading around that appointment.

Where the truck can stand
The highway, MG Road and Falnir Road take a full truck. The trouble is the side roads: steep, narrow, often with a sharp bend at the bottom, where a long truck can get stuck or be unable to reverse out. For those we park on level ground and use a pickup, or carry by hand. In the old town around Car Street and the Bunder, lanes are too tight even for that on busy days, and the crew carries goods to the nearest corner.

Traffic and timing
Private city buses crowd Hampankatta, the State Bank stop and the Jyothi and Lalbagh junctions through the day, and Pumpwell and Nanthoor slow down at office hours. Early mornings are clear, and a move that starts at 7 am usually has the truck loaded before the heat and the traffic build. Mangaluru Dasara, with its procession from the Kudroli temple, closes the central roads for a night, and Christmas week fills the roads around the churches, so a move near either goes on another day.

Weather and the months to plan around
The monsoon arrives in early June and does not let up until September, with July the wettest month and days of rain without a break. Moving in that season is possible: we pack with plastic under the outer wrap, bring tarpaulins for the walk to the truck and pause the loading in a downpour. Humidity stays high all year, so wooden furniture, leather and electronics going on a long move need a moisture barrier. March to May is hot and sticky, and December to February is the most comfortable stretch.

Our house is below the road with a long flight of steps. Can you move it?
Yes. At the survey we count the steps, measure the turns and check the width of the path, then size the crew for the carry. A double bed, an almirah or a washing machine may be lowered by rope on the steepest part. It adds time, so a house like that is planned over a longer day, and all of it is in the written quote.
Is it sensible to move during the monsoon?
If the date cannot change, yes. Everything is packed with a plastic layer, the path to the truck is covered with tarpaulin, and loading stops when a heavy burst comes through. For a move to Bangalore between June and September, expect a wider delivery window, since landslides can close the Shiradi or Charmadi ghat and send the truck round by another road.
I am a bank officer being transferred out of Mangalore. Can the bills be in the bank's name?
